found this odd-looking spike above the Eagle's shoulder (red arrows are pointing at the odd spike)
any idea what caused the spike?

That is a die clash mark.
Not uncommon on Peace dollars

nice catch as well
had to review the coin three times to make sure i was seeing that die clash correctly cause the coin has many dings and such on it so wanted to make sure it wasn't PMD
