I'm a big fan of overstruck coins and think it would be great to have a thread on these.

Please post yours or any interesting ones you've run across.

Here's one of mine from Ron Landis and the Gallery Mint:

I was also following this recent sale on Heritage. I was going to bid but it went for more than I was budgeting.

When was the 1861 $20 overstruck and how is it accomplished?

They were likely overstruck in 1891 which is when the medals were struck. They were done while Oliver Bosbyshell was superintendent of the Philadelphia Mint, himself a First Defender.

As for how it's accomplished, I'm not sure specifically, but they look like the ones Adam Cool did for Mel Wacks / @melwacks. Adam has passed on but perhaps Mel might know?

An amazing overstrike! Struck over a copper nickel 1859 Cent, here is a lovely Gem grade beauty with colorful toning on both sides. The pictorial of the beer glass has always a popular motif with crossover appeal to collectors of breweriana.

1863 TOKEN F-630C-4DO COPPER-NICKEL PE C. BAHR, STK OVER 1863 1C NY MS63
This token was personally owned by Q. David Bowers. He had his collection of civil war tokens certified by PCGS in special labels with his likeness on the back of the slab and his facsimile autograph. It is also pedigreed back to R & T, which is the firm of Rossa and Tanenbaum. This was placed into Rich Rossa's personal collection long ago, and Dave had first pick.
It has been taken care of for 156 years!

C. Bahr/"Erinnerung" (Remembrance) of 1863, New York, NY overstruck on an 1863 Cent PCGS MS63

In Civil War tokens, there are two categories: Patriotics and Storecards. They both served the general purpose of providing small change during the conflict which saw the general hoarding of all precious metals, including copper cents.
The difference between the two categories is pretty simple: while patriotics utilized imagery of flags, cannons, eagles, etc., Storecards had advertising info for specific merchants. In this case, C. Bahr, a liquor dealer in NYC had his merchant info on the back of a stock die 1240 "Erinnerung an 1863" German for "Remembrance of 1863."
His business location was the Cor of Cliff and Frankfort St.
This particular token may well be unique, because rather than have been struck on a normal planchet, it was OVERSTRUCK on a copper nickel 1863 Cent (with great detail at that.)

It's purported to be a "Confederate Silver Double Eagle" but it's made out of well corroded copper, right Steve?

Here's an interesting piece.

1860s Lincoln Medalet Struck on Mint State 1861 Half Eagle

Circa 1860s Lincoln Medalet Struck on 1861 Half Eagle. Similar to Baker-425 and Lincoln side of Julian-PR-30. Although in a previous sale we cataloged this piece as circa 1909, in all likelihood it is a 1860s production, for two excellent reasons: First, the Lincoln medalet obverse is struck over what was apparently a Mint State 1861 gold eagle, which would have been easily located in the 1860s, but not so in the 1900s. Second, and more important, the die used is quite similar, if not identical to, the Lincoln die(s?) used to produce Julian-PR-30, the Washington and Lincoln Mint medalet, measuring 19 mm. Robert W. Julian comments concerning the medalet that it was struck both inside and outside the Mint by various persons, possibly including several different die varieties. Mint engraver Anthony C. Paquet, who prepared the PR-30 die, left the employ of the Mint at about the time those pieces were struck, although most of them were struck for then-Chief Coiner John G. Butler or former Chief Coiner Lewis Broomall. Julian: "As the records are somewhat vague for this issue and the dies used, it is possible that several die varieties exist. Extant records show that the Lincoln die (or dies) used was ascribed variously to Paquet, Broomall, or Butler as the owner. Large numbers of these medals were struck between September, 1864, and October, 1866. The Lincoln die was also used privately outside the mint after 1866."

While this piece lacks the initial P on the neck truncation for designer Paquet, if he or others were responsible for striking outside-Mint pieces, it is not at all a stretch of the imagination that he would have removed his initial. Neither is it much of a stretch to suggest that this piece could have been an inside-Mint job, as the late 1850s and 1860s are well known for the many numismatic shenanigans created during the era. The tragedy of the Lincoln assassination in April 1865 may have spurred the usual (if repugnant) reaction among the more mercenary members of the numismatic community.

This is a Ron Landis test piece. He used 2 Indian Head silver rounds. It wasn’t thick enough so he sandwiched a blank copper for 1793 cent in the middle. Talk about high relief!

An 1991 ASE "Hawaiianized" to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Royal Hawaiian Mint.. Mintage is 10.
