Help identifying these autos?

Hi all,

I humbly ask for your help, as I have researched for hours and cannot ID these autos. Any idea who they are? I got them in L.A. in person in the 1990s. Your help is appreciated.

The last one is Art Aragon.

He was a pro boxer nicknamed "Golden Boy". After his boxing career, he became an actor.

    He died in 2008.

  • Steve, thanks! Can you make out what’s written about his name? Seems like you are more adept at this than me!

It seems to look like "George Pater....." or something similar. I just can't tell if it's someone else's signature, or an abreviated inscription from Art Aragon.

On the others, I looked up UCLA rosters for both basketball and football, and couldn't come up with anything that seemed to be close to an "M Lamm" or something similar who wore #50. On the first one, it seems to be "Ronald McCl..." and "#30 MSU", which could be Michigan State Univ, Mississippi State Univ, or Missouri State Univ.

Another note I found interesting about Aragon.....

It seems he was quite the ladies man. He is said to have had romances with Mamie van Doren, Jayne Mansfield and Marilyn Monroe.

On the Cash N Carry note:

    Most Likely Mike Lanier.

He wore #55 for UCLA from 1990-1993.

Good catch on the number being 55!

I just looked, and there was a Ronald McClain who played for the Univ of Memphis from 1987-88 - 1990-91; and he wore #30.

Nice going on the Ronald McClain!! I would never have thought about "MSU" equaling the University of Memphis. Apparently they were "Memphis State" until 1994.

Ok, what do you think about this possibility? I was looking at the last name above Art Aragon, blew it up a bit, and thought that the first letter may have been missing a piece due to moisture, wear, or whatever. I thought that it could be a "W". Then I took a first guess at maybe Walton. First name is obviously George. So I googled George Walton and there was a boxer in the late 90's all the way up through 2009 with that name.

Long shot I know, but then, I googled images, and there was a picture of him in the ring (apparently his last fight June 26th 2009). The caption said "Golden Boy Promotions Fight Card at the Desert Diamond Casino. Golden Boy, Art Aragon, Fighter on the card named George Walton, doesn't seem like too much of a stretch now. :):) Unfortunately couldn't find any autos to compare.

  • Whoa, mama! The collective knowledge and willingness to help a stranger on this forum is amazing. Thanks, y'all. I really have enjoyed this. You've tempted me to post more like this -- I have plenty of autos I got as a kid hanging out at UCLA in the early 1990s...(I went to summer camp there).

UCLA is a great place for an autograph hound to operate out of. Lots of famous people hang out there. Years ago I lucked out and scored a Marcia Wallace autograph there. In person no less!!!

To some, it becomes a game or challenge to figure out the mystery signature. You'll see on certain boards, the same people popping in and answering the majority of these types of questions. I believe some folks get a thrill out of it, like solving a word riddle or puzzle.

I don't have general signature knowledge myself, mostly baseball and specifically the Dodgers. Even then, sometimes a signature out of the normal context is just beyond me. Give me a Dodger team ball though and I can get you most, if not all the way there.

That said, I have no help to offer in this case. I would have followed the same path on the numbered signatures had I seem them earlier. Any clue helps get you to the signature a little quicker.

I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.
  • The one here that really vexes me is the one on the white card in cursive -- it clearly starts with "Daniel, great to meet you." I got it at a shop on Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills -- I think it was called David Levy Baseball Cards. I vaguely remember walking in there as a kid, like I regularly did, and Levy was talking to some sort of celebrity. When I learned who it was, I asked for an auto, and Levy gave the person a pen and this card. It looks like it is signed Don Selk Ollie. But that can't be right!

I think the next line is "Your Pal."
