Have you ever bought a whole collection of coins, just to get one or two coins?
When I was buying coins in the early 1980's (silver rush era) , i went to a guys house to buy his collection. I went through all his coins, took about an hour. I was only going to break about even on the deal, as the guy knew the silver market. I was going to turn down the deal when I looked at his peace dollar album, just run of the mill stuff for the most part. The very last coin that I looked at was a 1934-S peace dollar in AU-Unc. condition. A 1934-S Peace dollar in this condition was worth about $600 at the time. He wanted $18.00 each for the silver dollars.(All or none type deal). So I bought the whole collection just to get the 1934-S peace dollar. I broke even on the rest of the collection and the 1934-S peace dollar was my profit. A dealer friend sold it for me later for $600.

If I recall properly I read many years ago that Wayne Miller bought a silver dollar collection just to get the 96-O for his personal set.
I've done it many times. Especially with sets, there always seems to be a few in a set that make it a gotta buy!
all the time...and I have the boxes full of crap to prove it.
Yes, a number of times to get an unattributed doubled die or other variety.
I bought 72 samples once to get the 2 I wanted.
Ok. I'll be different...no, I have not.

Yes.
Sure. At then right price why not?
No... I have never had the opportunity. Not that I would necessarily take it. Cheers, RickO
Just bid on a batch of jetons to get one I really need. Haven't done this with US coins, only medals of lower value.
No, not really, but I'm pretty sure the guy who bought my set of Peace dollars did it just to get a couple of the coins. I've seen a few of them back on the market since then.
Yes. An example or two
I bought a collection (estate) summer 2019 before silver went up (when it still kind of low) for this very reason but felt buried w all the junk silver and crap stuff.
When silver went up banked.
When u doing these types of estates you can shoot yourself in foot if offering too high. If can’t get at my price no go.
My crazy beaver collection I’ve bought a couple of multi coin lots on eBay just to pull the Beavers out

I don't blame you! I would buy a barnful of wheat cents, late date proof sets, and cull Indian head cents, just to get one of those!
Bought a collection of Proof Franklins to get a 1956 Type 1 PR68DCam which was a top pop 1 at the time. If I remember right, two of the other Franklins in the deal also upgraded my 1950-1964 Proofs with Major Varieties. Sold the duplicates over time.

I'm sure it happened many times, but the most memorable was a 12 piece gold type set. About 15 years ago, this set got shopped all over town. I saw it last and at it's highest price. For the most part, the coins were just uncirculated generic, but the ten Indian was a shot 67 ! I had to have it....The ten did come back 66, it was gorgeous, and, did I mention, easy to sell......
