You have a discerning eye! Can you figure out what kept the 1990 from being an MS-70?

Yes, It had 1 micro tic on the obverse and a rim tic @ K4 on reverse. You can see the reverse rim tic in trueview image that kept it at MS69. I bought this AGE from my older brother. Wanted to ceritify it to keep for sentimental purposes.

When I had my 06 W's graded right after I bought them from the mint, they all received MS grades. Not sure what year PCGS switched to "SP." I have also noticed that some years the TPGs will include "Burnished" on the W label and some years they don't. It is my understanding that all of the W business strike eagles, both silver and gold, are struck on burnished blanks.

Users of the Pop Report and Price Guide must realize that the older burnished coin labels that bear an "MS" designation will be shown in the tables with an "SP" designation. There are no longer any MS designated burnished coins in the two tables.

The 1990 obverse looks SO much better than the 2006 and 2010. Looks more high relief and original to Mr. Gaudens.
The MS.1990 is thin and sexy as hell. MS. 2006W and 2010 look fat and frumpy.

They should all be 70's when they leave the mint however I guess 10 out of 12 aint bad. Congrats!

The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

All my other W ASE and AGE PCGS coins are labeled Burnished.
I had no idea what SP acronym meant. So I looked it up.
    SP designation stands for Specimen.

    From PCGS website.

    Specimen (SP)
Special coins struck at the Mint from 1792-1816 that display many characteristics of the later Proof coinage. Prior to 1817, the minting equipment and technology was limited, so these coins do not have the "watery" surfaces of later Proofs nor the evenness of strike of the close collar Proofs

The MS70 grade is perfection at 5X magnifacation per PCGS grading standards. When these W mint SP AGE coins fall off the die they can have what looks like small micro tics in the fields. I think these are luster breaks of some knid. What ever they are, they won't PCGS SP70.

Since the AGE is one Troy Ounce of gold, it takes 15 of them to equal a pound.

  • MsMorrisineMsMorrisine Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭✭

and even that will be over a pound...
