Amazing GC auction result 1882-S PCGS 67

blu62vetteblu62vette Posts: 11,933 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was tracking this one and when I checked it after closing it was definitely a WOW result. It had also auctioned 5 years ago (almost to the day), quite an amazing difference in results.

The coin looks extremely clean for a 67, OGH and CAC.

Wow maybe it will end up in a 68 holder someday?

I like the coin and the second generation OGH, a lot, but not at that price.

Maybe the 1794 SP66 $1 and 1804 PF65 Dexter $1 should have been consigned to GC.

  • clarkbar04clarkbar04 Posts: 4,974 ✭✭✭✭✭

Neither price makes much sense if you ask me. But at least 2 people disagree with me which isn’t surprising.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Not one I would consider....spot filled tarnish... two negatives right there. Price is ridiculous IMO.... Cheers, RickO

Wow for $7900 plus juice, that coin should be a knockout toner, But it's not, that's meh toning on a good day.

    Congrats bigly to the seller.

    I don't even like it.

The photo looks overexposed. The coin probably looks better in hand. I'm sure the seller is delighted with the result.

WAY over graded IMO... I guess they didn't consider eye appeal on this one. That's one ugly coin.

Here’s another GC OGH toner about to expire ...............

Hey, two people liked it enough to bid it to that level.
Personally, I don't see much to get excited about at that price.

I wonder how much of that was for the grade and whether the collector is new.

That price is solidly in Roadrunner territory and I think those coins have much more eye appeal.

    Registry $.

Someone hit that with an ugly stick too.

IMHO the coin sold for what its worth the second time around, the GC result is nuts.

Meh. It's still over priced for a 82-S with mediocre toning.

Some folks will break the bank for a toner. I don’t understand it, but that’s just me.

Do you think it should have graded 65 or something? It looks as nice as or nicer than many 67’s I’ve seen.

There are plenty to choose from at that grade level. There would be no reason to spend anywhere near that type of money for registry points.

I'd have to see it in person to even consider giving it a 65....Also can't believe that CAC put a sticker on it... It I had to describe the looks of that coin in one word, it would be "leprosy".

My guess is that the luster and clean surfaces make for a pretty coin in-hand. That color is probably better and quite flashy, too. Of course we’d all have to see it in-hand to make our own judgements .... but at least from these Legend pics, 67 seems fair to me technically speaking....looks very clean.

It goes to show people see coins differently. I couldn’t even conceive of a grade below 66 and think the coin’s quite attractive. The assigned grade looks spot-on to me and bidders obviously saw it very differently from you, as well. The fact that you don’t like the coin doesn’t mean it’s over-graded.

    I see it as a $1000 - $1200 coin (basically as a 67+ - the surfaces are super clean)

I think you can double that for a toner in the OGH. Still an overpayment in my opinion. Hope the buyer loves it, though, end of the day, their opinion is the only one that matters.

The Legend auction wherein the coin sold for ~$2K was five years ago. The GC auction closed recently.

Multiples of the previous auction. Images are much better this time around. Expect GC ads in future to feature it as an example of a result you could enjoy.
