Received a $1000 performance award... What should I buy

AlanSkiAlanSki Posts: 1,937 ✭✭✭✭✭

And why? I'm open to anything. So far I only have Morgan's, Lincoln's, classic Commemoratives, and Jefferson's. I'd like something different but I'm not familiar with other series.

Congrats! I guess it depends on how different you want to go. My go-to is always a coin I always wanted but couldn’t afford or justify. At this point it would be something gold. You could get a nice circulated $10 gold coin around that price. That would be different but might spark gold fever!

Since you like Lincolns, why not choose a really nice red Indian Head Cent? Maybe a Seated Dollar. Basically something that is of the same denomination and one type over.

I was thinking about a nice proof Indian cent in RB or a nice proof V nickel.

No. I work at the Loma Linda Veterans Hospital.

And thank you for that, keep up the great work! Indian head cents are a great series. If you want something totally different you can get some mercury dimes. They are really lovely coins and if you work backwards in years you can pick up some gems for very little.

If I had the extra 1,000 bucks I'dl look for the highest grade PCGS Seated Dollar that I could get. If not that, as high a grade PCGS graded Barber Half Dollar to add to my type set.

That's awesome. We've suspended all our bonuses and awards (along with so many other things). I would look at something super collectible - a key date, or a condition rarity, or something super shiny that I normally wouldn't be able to get - a Proof Walker or IHC or Buff.
Good luck picking. Can't wait to see what you pick!

  • kiyotekiyote Posts: 5,588 ✭✭✭✭✭

I get a bonus every year and like clockwork about a week before the bonus something happens that causes an unexpected expense. 😫

I would pick up something really cool like a wrong denomination error.. some thing you could show non-collectors and even they would think it was neat.

Based on what you have shown on this board, and what you say you have, I would consider one to a few type set offerings of a Walker, a Standing Lib', a Mercury Dime and a Buffalo Nickel. Maybe some slightly better date material and in similar or complementing grades to the rest of your collection. Any of these (especially the Walker) should fit in well with your Commemoratives as representation of the Classic 20th Century designs, and will help set you up for a 20th Century Type Set should you decide to pursue completing that.

And thank you for your service to our former service men and women.

If it’s $1000 after taxes, I say add a few hundred and get a nice $10 generic date Indian

If it’s before taxes, then get a nice $5 gold coin

Something that you wouldn’t normally get and that you would remember how your earned it.,,,

If golds not your thing then a trade $ or liberty seated dollar

My sister told me long ago, " never should on yourself." Best advice I ever got. But since you asked , my thought is "as much gold as you can.

For example : did a quick eBay search.

  • Eldorado9Eldorado9 Posts: 2,546 ✭✭✭✭✭

Perhaps, with some searching, you could find a really nice original proof Barber Half, or a proof Walker. Both great coins to enjoy, and show off.

I like this advice, but would add that the new piece(s) should be in old holders since this would also align with your interests and might present a challenge in finding just the right coin.

"I work at the Loma Linda Veterans Hospital." Thank you for your service to our Veterans. It is difficult to suggest specifics for another collector. Most of us end up suggesting what 'we' would like to have in such circumstances. I would normally recommend some gold. A collector coin would hold both interest and liquidity. Good luck and let us know what you decide. Cheers, RickO

As stated above, a nice proof walker. $1k can get a very nice one from 1937-42.

If for single coin collection purposes a 1913 Proof Buffalo Nickel. If for investment, others are wiser than I for that advice.

Ehh.. it's a Morgan. It is an interesting issue at least, since the CC mint was 7 years out of operation in 1900.
