Signature confirmation during Covid

MasonGMasonG Posts: 6,262 ✭✭✭✭✭

Has anybody here made an eBay sale, received payment through PayPal, shipped with signature confirmation, received confirmation of delivery via USPS carrier signature in lieu of buyer, and buyer filed a claim of non-receipt?

If so, what happened?

PCGS has switched to UPS and the drivers have to sign for you to avoid contact. My understanding is that USPS still requires signature confirmation but I cannot confirm. Hopefully others weigh in.

I have a potential buyer who says USPS carriers are not getting signatures where he lives.

Sounds good so far, but what happens when the buyer claims non-receipt, the signature isn't his and he files a "Not Received" claim with PayPal/eBay?

I have no idea...haven't come across nor have I heard of anyone else having that experience.

Install a camera or two by a front door and front porch or steps? It won’t sign for you, but it also won’t lie and a picture/video is worth a thousand words. And/or get a PO Box?

How do you get a buyer to do this?

@MasonG -It is up to the person who receives it. You and I both know if you make a helpful or genuine recommendation to someone who is a loser/thief/liar and give them an excuse or reason to steal and screw you over, that is never a good idea.

Spread the word. Tell a friend. Make a post here. Who knows. Between cameras and those Ring doorbells as well as other brands there are plenty of options. It is really up to the individual. I’m not sure I understand 100% what you meant. Say something to a buyer like-“You can’t buy this unless you have a camera to film and prove you got the item”. Good luck with that.

    Chance favors the prepared mind.

I still have to sign for packages when I pick up at PO box, but I had sent one with quite a bit of stuff in it delivered yesterday and signature name was recorded as C Covid. Thankfully , I know the recipient and we do a lot of business, but i can see where this could be a problem with a scammer or other buyer

I got packages from ups and did not have to sign either. I did know the driver so that helped some. Fwiw

All services are having the driver sign for signature required packages. I have not heard of the issue described in the OP occurring yet. Cheers, RickO

I would think if someone from the USPS signed for them ... that would hold up.

Appreciate the help, but I need to know what PayPal thinks. I sent them a message yesterday and have yet to hear back. The last time I tried calling them on another topic, I was on hold for 45 minutes and still didn't get a definitive answer. I don't really want to go through that again and was hoping that possibly, somebody here has dealt with the issue as noted in the first post.

UPS just left a package with $35K in coins coming back from PCGS sitting on a wall outside our house.

Fortunately I saw it before someone grabbed it.

Time to get a PO box!!!

I had a package come in not too long ago delivered by USPS and it needed a signature. Our mail carrier asked us if it was OK if he signed it for us which we agreed to.

How would you have reacted if he signed for it without your approval, and you never got it? What would PayPal do, if you filed a claim of non-receipt?

That's the potential situation I'm trying to resolve.

USPS Registered Mail is still taking signatures, at least it did yesterday.

usps is signing for the recipient and leaving in the mailbox. This fulfills the requirement for signature confirmation. Ebay/Paypal signature confirmation does not require the signature of the recipient, only that of someone at the address. When usps signs for the item they are at the address. Removed four tubes of ASEs from my mailbox just today that required a signature.

Unfortunately this does not help buyers who never got an item that was signed for by usps.

Understand the OP's situation. I have no advice to give. I could see a lot of false claims by shady people taking advantage of the current situation. AND THAT SUCKS. As a buyer only, I have my local P.O. hold all packages. I stop by every 3rd day for pick them up. Still have to sign, not a problem here.

I just picked up a grading order at the counter of the USPS station where I keep a P. O. Box, and my signature and ID were required by the clerk. Your claim that PCGS has switched to UPS is not true.

UPS is known to "handoff" shipments to USPS for the final leg of delivery.

Not seeing anything encouraging here yet. I will be ending my eBay listings priced over $750 shortly.

I was hoping that maybe somebody had encountered this situation and PayPal had agreed to accept the carrier's signature as sufficient for their guarantee. Probably optimistic thinking on my part.

It would say "delivered" so yes PayPal would cover the seller.

And there would be a viewable on-line signature as required. Doesn't matter whose it is as long as usps says "delivered." Some carriers are signing the recipient's name and some carriers are signing their own name. I have noticed that for registered they are signing on my behalf and then knocking on my front door. Once I come to the door they set the package down in front of me and walking away. For non registered requiring a sig they are just signing and leaving in the mailbox without coming to the door.

I would make sure it was insured as well as signature required.

    Two situations for me.

Last week I was supposed to receive a USPS 2 day delivery from an auction house with signature confirmation. 4 days after the mail was sent I was wondering when the mail was going to be delivered so I checked the tracking number. Surprise, surprise, the package was listed as delivered that day and signed for. Given that I'm the only person at that address that was news to me. The mail carrier hadn't even bothered to leave it at my front door. I went out to my mailbox, the package was slightly larger than the mailbox, and left out in the open next to the road.

Also, on 8/31 I sent a letter Certified Mail to Durham, NC. It made it to Raleigh, NC. on 9/2. It took from 9/2 - 9/9 to make it to the Durham post office. It STILL has not been delivered to the appropriate Durham address.

If the buyer tries to claim an empty package.

I asked my insurance company about this. They said they understand the circumstances and if an issue were to arise where an actual signature was not obtained and an item claimed to be lost, they’d find in my favor. Small bit of comfort.
