The Yellowstone Collection of U. S. Gold on Great Collections

ms71ms71 Posts: 1,603 ✭✭✭✭✭

A group of U.S. gold coins called "The Yellowstone Collction" is currently up for auction on Great Collections. A lot of high-end items.140 total pieces, of which 17 have CAC beans. Anybody care to share their thoughts on fact that only 12% have been stickered? Never submitted? Doesn't matter, the bean wouldn't have made any difference? Likely submitted but not approved? I'd really enjoy some well thought out responses on this. Please don't bother with the snarky stuff that just wastes everybody's time..

Successful BST transactions: EagleEye, Christos, Proofmorgan,
Coinlearner, Ahrensdad, Nolawyer, RG, coinlieutenant, Yorkshireman, lordmarcovan, Soldi, masscrew, JimTyler, Relaxn, jclovescoins, justindan, doubleeagle07

Now listen boy, I'm tryin' to teach you sumthin' . . . . that ain't no optical illusion, it only looks like an optical illusion.

My mind reader refuses to charge me. . . . . . .

I'm going to leave a link here and return later with snark. (after I look at the coins)

It could simply mean they are accurately graded but not the upper end of the grade in CAC’s interpretation.

I would assume they have been evaluated as GC would probably recommend it. There’s the odd chance the owner didn’t want to pay the fees but I think it a bit less likely.

When it comes to selling gold of a certain price level or higher then CAC is definitely helpful. I have about 20-25 gold coins but I’ve never sent any in since I don’t have an account with them but I’m also not planning on selling them in the next 15 years.

There are some really nice gold coins there... and I do not care if they have a bean or not (That is not snark, that is cold, hard fact).....I like gold coins...and some of those are really outstanding. Cheers, RickO

12% is a solid sticker rate for high end gold. Maybe a shade lower than the averages, but likely within 1-2 standard deviations, if I had to guess.

I'll limit my comment to saints because that's really the only thing I know.
There are 9 saints in the auction & only one has TrueView.
I find GC's pictures worthless in evaluating a technical grade on coins because there is too much glare.
Therefore, the 1911-D MS67 is the only one I can give an opinion on.

It looks to me like a C coin & I would not buy it for 67 price.
To compare, this coin did not CAC either at 67 although I would buy it at 67 price (if I could)

(1911-D Hansen MS67+ It's a previous Fox coin & I'm almost positive he submitted all his coins before selling)

My opinion is neither GC or JA is reliable enough for me to be able to confidently buy or not buy any coins for MY collection.

A bean might have helped on some of those coins, but some are nice enough without.

Several really tough dates in there and a few toughies not reflected in current values. Neat collection.

I find GC pictures are generally fine, All the major auction houses can have issues with images, its an art sometimes not a science.

Most of the liberty gold should not even be in a problem free holder. Gack

I also have trouble "reading" GC images, especially of gold coins. As a result, I tend not to bid on their gold offerings.

    1. Based on the extremely low cost of CAC submissions, combined with the large increase in market value for those that succeed, I would think all the PCGS and NGC coins would have been submitted (or told by someone with good expertise not to submit certain ones, knowing they would not “Pass”). No need not to submit coins that might succeed!
    2. As noted above by @DelawareDoons, it’s tough for Gold to get CAC’s. Perhaps some without are “C” coins? Perhaps some have “surface issues”, for which @TomB gave an excellent detailed description in a very recent thread.

I am not a gold coin buyer, but I do now how to grade, and evaluate most all coins. Lot of coins in the group and some tuff dates, but In all honesty some of the coin date/type that I have followed over the years, compared to some in this group well ill just say marginal. I can see based on the overall group why only a few stickered. And again, some look nice.

I am not commenting on the auction pictures or anything of that, they seem fine to me,(nor do I want to discourage any potential bidders) in fact GC is liquidating some of my stuff as we speak. And the process so far has been nothing short of professional and spot on. I have talked with Ian a few times early in the process, and he is great to work with and never to busy to help or answer questions I have.

I do think CAC makes a huge difference and will in prices realized especially on coins that count. I only have two coins in what I'm selling (from personal holdings)that wont sticker that will be going up for sale. Ill compare them vs the others at a later time once its all said and done.

Based on the value of many of the high grade coins, it’s fair to assume that CAC has reviewed them all.

GC really has the worst photos. It's hard to judge the coins in the collection.

Yea well...I guess my opinion here means nothing based on no agreement or likes.
    Good luck.
