I can't speak for the gold, but the SLQ is an attractive example for that price point. No rip, but it has value in that range.
It has the typical but not terrible incuse head (typical for late Denver Mint coins), and has some flat rivets, but the center of the shield struck up nicely. A little soft on the Eagles breast, but again, pretty typical, and not really distracting. Strike is everything on these, and it is not common to get well struck pieces.
Looks like it has pleasing luster and a good skin, which is definitely a plus at this grade (or any grade as far as I am concerned).

In terms of the gold...as #RickO always says gold is good...old gold is better...I'm always astonished that one can purchase a 150+ year old gold coin from a defunct mint for $100 over melt...
Unfortunately the reason the price of these common date collector grade old gold coins is so good is that there just isn't any demand...very few collectors putting together sets by date and the ones that are are looking for higher graded pieces...
I like the dirt in the crevices as a sign of originality but based on your pics I wouldn't be surprised if the coin had an old wipe with a chamois at some point in time...also even though the doubled date is not a major variety I like it because it is obvious with the naked eye and doesn't require a microscope and guidebook...
For the price I think it's a cool coin...like your SLQ not a rip but fair value...
Fair deal...neither overpaid nor got a deal of a lifetime. The gold is nice for mintmarked old circulated gold. The rattler holder with CAC is nice for the SLQ. Good job!
Thanks! The SLQ has nice toning!
They are both nice coins.... Though, as noted previously, my preference is always gold (
)... Though silver is a very close second.... Both precious metals have innate beauty...that is why they make coins and jewelry with them.
Wow...sometimes I amaze myself with such insight.
Cheers, RickO
Nice coins
I like that branch mint gold.....It's really surprising to me that pieces like that are so affordable !
Low price branch mint gold made before the Civil War. What’s not to like. Complete set is unlikely, but having a few in your collection is a good thing in my opinion. Low survival numbers and it’s gold.
Nice coins!
