How Is This Possible?

Saw this guy in an upcoming auction. I've seen my fair share of MS68 coins, but how did this one get in a MS68FB holder? Have never seen that many marks on a MS68 coin.

Considering it's a Pop 2/0 coin with a PCGS Price Value of $10,000 I'm stunned.

That was kind of my thought ... but color shouldn't add two points, especially at this end of the spectrum.

    My opinion only of course

Well it is FB. Color is good, but that’s the best I can say about that one.

It is attractive but I don’t quite see 68, either.

    It's in the toning.

grading is not a perfect concept, some coins should be lower, others higher just all depends on how the graders see the coins

No way should that receive a 68. What is going on in the hairline just above the temple?

Color should not add any points but it does almost every time in current grading

    Yes, case in point...

I do believe I got the 68, instead of a 67, because of the color?

That color doesn’t look attractive enough to have bumped the grade of the coin.

And thats what folks were doing with coinfacts, you remember what happened there. A PCGS graded coin that your "discussing" the grade of on the PCGS forum, nothing bad could ever happen there. ;)

You are right. And I was being a bit sarcastic. I just meant that sometimes threads like this go in the wrong direction. Truth be told...... This type of conversation is very educational. It benefits everyone who collects, even if like me they will never buy a coin this expensive. "Buy the coin , not the slab" is numismatic best practice for a reason.

Totally agree. No reason to take a good thread off the rails. Let's learn all we can.

The carbon spots, the hits, not for me.

I am putting a list of Mercury Dimes together that are in PCGS plastic and graded MS67, MS67+, MS68, MS68+ (including FBs) and have serious issues, including a couple that seem like hatchet marks. Granted, I have no idea when they were graded or why they were graded so high but the situation seems pretty rough to me.

    I am feeling ill....

I have a Mexico 19th century 20 centavos silver piece Pcgs 65 pop of 2 in 65 none higher or lower. Beautiful lustrous coin. I got from online auction for $153. I can’t sell it anywhere what I feel it’s worth or what I would take. Pop of just 2! Will get my price or just sit on it. This kind of thing makes me sick a US common 1956 dime for $10,000? Who in the world would pay that lol? Outside of bullion I have had it with a lot of US coins, except perhaps Seated, Commems, Barber, or CC.

I was looking at PCGS 3000 and Commem index this morning over coffee. An article in the recent PCGS Mkt review showed how classic Commems 10-15c on dollar vs 89. I like those coins will buy some more ms 64-66. They are so absurdly cheap, just can’t see them going lower. Think what $10,000 would buy in those.

Plenty of Reverse hits through and above EPU on this 1939 MS68 Merc. I have held this coin in hand. It is NOT MS68, despite what the holder says. The luster is not mysteriously fantastic either.

Here is a Top Pop 1944-D/D MS68FB variety that looks awesome, minus the hatchet marks on the reverse. Maybe they are calling this strike thru material or some type of planchet flaw? Just not a 68FB in my book, even though the majority of the coin looks fantastic.

That coin is clearly over graded and I wouldn't ever want to own that coin as a 68. I wish I received presents like this when I send my raw mercury dimes in...
