Ok, another AT or NT

This one has a different story. I'll tell later. Any guesses?

I am not happy with the toning. Those 'neon' blues along with purple frighten me a bit.
Although with silver eagles it's a toss up whether the toning is natural vs accelerated.

Does NGC still not recognize any toning on silver eagles as being NT?

  • ike126ike126 Posts: 802 ✭✭✭✭✭

Silver eagles also tone differently because there 99% not 90% ive seen hundreds grade like this AT and NT.

I could believe NT on that coin, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.

AT but market acceptable is my guess.

I've gotta say I'm with you on that count buddy. I've seen so many wild examples of toned ASE's it makes my head swim. With that said it can go either way and I wouldn't be surprised.

Obverse looks AT and Reverse looks NT so I’m gonna say both but i’m not sure which one came first.
    Probably NT first then AT.

AT but I've seen a few similar looking ones from when PCGS went through a loose period (and I'm not talking about the ex PCI target toners). I don't think PCGS would grade it today.

I had this in one of those brown envelopes in my desk back in 2015. I got laid off from the oilfield that same year and we wound up having to sell our house. Everything was boxed up and put into storage until I got my job back and we moved here to W. Tx. in 2017. We got a house in July of 2017 and slowly started unpacking stuff. I eventually found this SAE in it's envelope in 2018 and and not long after that, took these pics. I did keep it out and put it in my Dansco.

So now I know the story and I still don’t know the answer. That sounds like a natural process to me, buuuuut....I don’t know.

  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,625 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've seen them tone similar to that, and those colors, from being in those cardboard "Happy Anniversary (Birthday/it's a boy/girl/etc)" holders.

I'm going with NT but who knows what the TPGS would say.....?

Was it originally white when you placed it in the envelope?

I've seen originally white, put into the cardboard holders I described, and then put out on display, tone VERY similar to that ....nothing else was done/introduced into the environment. Just the holder and air (and whatever sunlight/humidity anyone in the house lived with naturally as well)

Interesting. That shade of blue and purple isn't something I would usually expect without assistance. Thinking of submitting it?

No I have no intentions of that. Here's a quick pic with my phone I just took. The blues haves taken over more in the last 2 years. I was actually hoping it would stop turning when I put it in my Dansco. Guess not.

    accelerated toning

Nope....just a very reactive "pure" silver coin, as opposed to most people being used to 90% silver coins and the toning on them.

The environment these are stored in, and exposed to air/humidity, really makes a difference...and the colors on the storage matters to (ie....the cardboard holders that have more of a blue or more of another color, close to the coin, will matter).

Maybe the reverse will "catch up" to the obverse.

you have a good point about the purity @Bochiman . And who knows how the OP coin became that way.

I've had these and it will, if it is flipped over and left in the same type of storage environment.

Did you neutralize it before putting it in the Dansco?

NT or AT who's to say?

But OMG, that should not be judged as market acceptable.

Nah, and not really worried about it.

@lkeigwin .... Lance, now that is a unique ASE.... I have never seen one tarnish like that... Cheers, RickO

I have this one that's been sitting in a flip for a few years now Lance that looks almost like yours. These things tone really weird sometimes.

    For comparison;

  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,625 ✭✭✭✭✭

Open the plastic lid and let it sit stored.
Use a colored version of one of those and don't close the plastic lid.

Either choice will show you a toning progression starting in less than 6 months and it will progress somewhat rapidly in comparison. Don't change anything else but those things I list.

I will just leave it alone. It’s only bullion anyway.

If you can get this in a straight graded holder and if the coin lacks sentimental value, you could probably get a very nice premium for it. It looks more attractive than it initially did. There is a die hard niche of collectors of toned ASEs out there.
