Nice coin, good color but if I would purchase it as a raw coin I would buy as an AU53. Too much wear in the hairlines for MS grade IMHO

Wow, I never would’ve thought the VF range. Definitely wouldn’t look out of place in an AU holder.

I notice that this coin is in an older PCGS slab. In the early years of slabbing the grading services would either slab a coin with a straight grade or they would return your coin raw in a flip which collectors referred to as a "body bag". Once in awhile, if the problem wasn't too severe, they would silently net grade a coin downward and slab it. This coin may have had an issue they felt warranted a silent net grade.

I also am surprised. I thought AU 53 - AU 58.

I agree they used to do this to a lot of coins back in the day, however I will tell you there is no way they net graded this coin... it is an absolute beauty and zero problems. They just simply graded it low cause it is frosty original surfaced and a beauty of a circ piece. I also believe the grading standards were diff back then which coulda contributed in some way...
Don’t know how anyone sees the piece as MS...with that said, AU50-53 would be fair.

With this discussion in mind, I think the point is that quality and eye appeal can def be deceiving even for the trained eye... thoughts on that point?
How bout the other 2 coins??? Any thoughts on those next to the 1853 on grade???
