Interesting and historical. From an aesthetic perspective, though, it isn't a dramatic departure from the standard design.

Fun thread — I like a lot of patterns out there and they can go $$$$ which isn’t surprising given their relatively minuscule pops. A narrow yet deep pocketed market for them ....

Quite interesting that Merc — but for me, too similar despite the 20 year pre-‘36 aspect.

I prefer the obvious design departures and/or pairings of multiple designs from the same/different series.....

The Winged Liberty Head dime (it was never supposed to be called the "Mercury" dime) is a very interesting item. I suspect it will do very well in the auction. My only objection is that it should not be called a proof as it was struck as a part of a test run of 2,000,000 coins! The test failed due to problems using the coins in vending machines and phones and the entire mintage, less this coin and possibly some others that sit unnoticed in collections, were melted. Check your 1916 Winged Liberty Head dimes!

This last sold for $138,000 in 2008 so it will be interesting to watch.

True, the pattern isn't a dramatic departure from the regular Mercury dime, so at a broad scale, they appear quite similar. For me, that is part of the intrigue - most people would glance at the coin and not know it was anything special.

Though similar in design, both the obverse and reverse of the pattern are completely different renderings from what was used on regular dimes, so at the fine scale - comparing detail for detail - it is actually quite a different coin.

I like this coin a lot - it's a great conversation piece and a great example of a rare design variety. If a few hundred more of them were discovered, perhaps I could buy one
