The wait is finally over. We're crossing the color threshold like so many other countries have already. August 28'th.

I know you've been chomping at the bit to get these...remember, there is a HHL of two for the first 24 hours.
First we have the commemorative half dollar with a bright orange basketball, orange rim, and white net. S minted for $55
And presenting the commemorative silver dollar with just the rim colored orange and the net white. P minted for $95
I'm relieved they're not coloring the gold coins.

Done well I can see some people like it. It certainly looks nicer than the state quarters that were colorized. For me, though, nope. I have no interest in it.
My tax dollars are being used for this garbage? Why don’t they stick to making coins for commerce? Apparently there are issues just fulfilling that basic function at the moment.

Maybe, but I wonder if this is still true if you apply the same accounting principles the IRS requires private small businesses to follow....... or is it governmental magic math?
Besides that, what purpose does it serve for a governmental entity to create revenue? That’s not their mandate. Aren't they then operating in a state of privileged competition with tax-generating private enterprise??

You can't even soak those in Acetone to remove PVC residue. Better store them properly.
My opinion
I’m in a huge basketball family and I don’t know how well the huge ball/tiny rim is going to fly around here. Maybe at a show in a few years when they’ve come down in price.

I like it. It's about time the US Mint joins the rest of the world and starts catering to potential young future collectors. It will not be popular with the older groups, but they are a dying breed of dinosaurs. Good luck US Mint. I hope your efforts are successful.
I thought it might be
Traditionalists will mostly dislike a new issue like this because it’s, well, not traditional. While I’m sure the Mint would be happy to sell these coins to traditionalists, I doubt that’s their primary market. That market has dwindled by millions in the last five decades. I imagine the target market is different. Will they be a winner? We probably won’t know for a few years. For me, I may buy one as a contrarian move.
After thinking about it, I don't like it.
Though I don’t mind colorized coins in general, this one is not for me. But there are a whole lot of basketball fans and I could see this issue doing alright.

I suppose the takeaway is that the colors of orange and black used in the bball has something in common with Garfield... Or in the alternative the coinage produced by the Franklin Mint should be appreciated as being ahead of its time... Even though several here may politely suggest that time has not come.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Make the coins we need for circulation and not waste time with this garbage.
I'm in the targeted age demographic but this is a hard pass for me. Notice the proof and burnished of these are pretty much the only coins that haven't sold out on the mint site this year that I've seen. I am also biased in a way, I like traditional coins plenty of beauty to see in history. I also see no value in sports outside of recreation. We have enough funny money being printed nowadays, leave the coins alone
