So I realize I have about 28,000 pre 1960 nickels

wrightywrighty Posts: 840 ✭✭✭✭

Not sure why I’m sharing this but I just finished organizing them and it dawned on me I may have been hoarding all these years. I don’t need a lot of sleep so I use to roll search nickels and thought it would be fun to see if I could put together a roll set of Jefferson’s from circulation. I put all pre 1960 nickels into canvas bags and when I stopped roll searching I started sorting. In the end I have approximately 28,000 nickels. Out of the thousands of rolls I searched I never found a 50 d or a 39 d, and I stopped saving the 1959’s. Now that I’m all organized I don’t know exactly what to do with them. I probably don’t need 25 rolls of 1939 nickels. A few pictures below.

Ebay. Not a huge profit but there is a little money to be made.

I'd search the Henning dates for fakes, though. A 1946 Henning just sold on Ebay for over $1000.

You might say that is a lot of time on your hands. Why did you go with nickels, instead of something that had a higher likelihood of yielding silver?

How many "other" coins did you get out of all that searching? A ton of Buffs?

I wonder how many albums you could fill up....!

Wow, lots of nickels! I don’t have that many but I’ve been fortunate enough to find a 39d in change. I’ve not found a 39s, 42d t1, 48s or a 50d but I was able to get most of a 38-64 set.

Best thing you could do (although I don’t recommend it) is buy a coin wrapping machine and sell them on eBay as old bank rolls...

Or you could sell them as rolls and unsearched for varieties.

Unless you really just want to get rid of them, I’d probably search them for major varieties.

Years ago I saved pre-1960 nickels as well, and quit after amassing several hundred.
When Cherrypickers came out, I went through and found a ‘39 DDR, and a D/S ‘46? in the group.
After that I let yn’s go through them to fill Whitman folders.

When I first started collecting as a YN in the early '80's; Jefferson Nickels were the first series I collected. I filled most of those holes from change I got back, or, from my parents loose change. What a time.

I remember getting a 1938 dated Jefferson back in change, and rubbing my eyes to make sure I wasn't mistaking the find for a '58. I don't believe collecting was ever more fun than those days. I still save pre '60 Jefferson's when I get them back if they aren't too badly worn, or, damaged.

Roll hunting Jeff nickels is great. Only historic circulating coin you can actually realistically complete an entire album of from CRH.

So weird, but I save Jeffs too. Have a safe full and have no idea why I do that. I have found them all and then started the Cherrypicking process. Did find several (3) 43/2 war nickels. Still have most of them and probably will just cash them in as not much market and I hate the ebay shipping.

I found all dates except the 1939-D. I can still recall getting a 1950 and turning it over and seeing the little D.

I'm afraid to count how many I have. I went through the hoarding phase and have tons of BU rolls, probably 40 or 50 BU sets, a 100 or so circ. sets(minus the war nickels as the silver peak got them) and I have never spent a nickel dated before 1960. I also bought several large deals of pre 1960 circ. nickels.

I know a certain dealer that would pale all of us combined with his hoard of Jefferson Nickels as he offered them to me a while back!

Back before I retired from the coin shop in 2010 I used to save pre-1960 nickels for a dealer who came by 2-3 times a year buying bulk junk. He gave me 8 cents each.

    Same here.

I think the 1939 should be checked for DDR-001. You'll want to look for the 1942-D/horizontal D too if you have any of that date and Mint.

    Do not dispose of them.

They could go up in value as a collectible coin (ditto the Roosevelt dime and Washington quarter) if the current protests of all things politically incorrect succeed in removing TJ, FDR and GW from the nickel, dime and quarter.

TJ and GW owned slaves and FDR interned Japanese citizens during WWII. Cannot go along with that, so remove the from our coinage (and currency).

I still don’t have a 39-D, but was lucky enough to find a nice 50-D probably in the third box of nickels I ever searched. It’s really fun trying to complete/constantly upgrade a Jefferson Dansco album via circulating coins only. Also interesting how incredibly difficult it is to find nice examples of some of the more common dates.

Don't take offense to what I am going say - but get rid of them! You're not going to get rich hoarding them. After you have searched them for varieties, I see no other reason to hold them. In fact, the cash you have tied up in them could probably buy several MS graded nickels you don't even have. JMHO

You have around 1400 bucks in nickels. Have you ever considered buying some gold with that money?
I agreed with the condolences statement cause I’ve been there and done that when I was much, much younger. I did it with buffalo nickels and Mercury dimes when I was a kid . I remember how much my head hurt after a long time of searching.

After thinking about this overnight, I realize that the reason I have so many nickels is that when I was a kid a nickel was a lot of money. It had value.

Save yourself a lot of time and effort. Just pull out the rolls of 38-D & S and 39-S (plus any silver nickels) and cash in the rest. Circulated Jefferson nickels had their day during the great coin boom of the early 1960's but died along with that boom and have never recovered.

So, a couple of years ago I realized that I probably had about 36K pre-1960 nickels. I had sifted through probably 400K nickels to find those. But the sad fact is that most of them have/had no real value over face. So over the last couple of years I sifted through them again and culled out most of the lot and only kept about 2k or a box worth of nickels that were 1938-39, mintmarked, some semi-keys like the 1950 and 1955 Philly etc. Also kept stuff EF and above but culled the rest into the coin machine at my credit union. Going back through I found some '39-D's that I hadn't separated out - which was convenient because some were pretty nice and awhile back I traded some of those with a local collector who was sifting through boxes of quarters looking for W mintmarks.

Search them for Cherrypicker's Guide varieties. A good number of them can get a decent premium on eBay, even in circulated grades.
