Reported, that one was a POS.

The first thing I noticed was the scratches. No way that coin would straight grade, and that’s just from a first glance.

The one with this cert number can be viewed here: https://coins.ha.com/itm/indian-eagles/eagles/1915-10-ms64-pcgs

I will say, I’ve seen a lot of legitimately graded MS Indians that I consider junk/melt in terms of eye appeal.

Here's the actual coin with that slab number from a 2018 Heritage Auction.

Check the raised extra metal around E PLURIBUS UNUM. Not sure why they stupidly polished it with sandpaper. That coin is a really poorly made fake. They actually did a better job faking the slab. New collectors should not get over confident viewing this coin---most fake US gold coins are far better made than this coin and are not as obviously fake as this coin.

Bad coin but decent job on the barcode:

  • joebb21joebb21 Posts: 4,772 ✭✭✭✭✭

I believe the insert to be real. (unless those with sharper eyes can show me to be wrong)

Otherwise my going theory was that the holder was opened and sealed again.

True but that QR code on the back of the slab does not match the original.

That is a really bad counterfeit and a decent copy of the slab. This is darn scary stuff. A non-collector would more than likely miss this for sure.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Is it possible this seller opened the slab, removed the coin, substituted a fake coin, and then reseal the slab?

I think the label is counterfeit, but I do think it is one of the best I've seen. The lettering is not as crisp as it should be. The coin is atrocious.

I attributed this to an out of focus shot. The whole picture is slightly out of focus and therefor blurry.

    Atrocious #wordoftheday :)

OK, here is something odd to me! I found an on-line QR reading site and ran the counterfeit reverse label as well as the genuine one. The results were opposite of what I expected- the counterfeit scanned and linked to the correct on-line cert, the genuine had a reading error. I tried it several times and then on a second reader site with the same results...

    Visually they are absolutely different.

Edit, both linked me to the correct PCGS certification when I scanned with my phone app. Same results with both PCGS cert verifier and Android barcode scanner.

Looks like the two QRs are made to different resolutions or "pixels" I have not made my own QR codes, I am guessing thats an option when you create them.
