Pick a coin you would like to see restruck in gold..

kiyotekiyote Posts: 5,614 ✭✭✭✭✭

My pick? I always really liked the trade routes Sacajawea dollar. (I realize this point is kind of moot because it’s already at least gold colored but I digress)

1907 C Ultra High Relief $20. Struck in Charlotte with genuine Carolina gold. There’s still gold mined in the Carolinas but not in large quantities, of course. But that’s my fantasy piece.

For items not originally struck in gold...

1903 Philippine US Peso which would look great in gold and also a 1793 strawberry leaf cent.

Walking Liberty half in the one oz size, best eagle design ever on a coin. This is what the new ASE's should look like.

I concur with you statement on that eagle. But I'd be in favor of the high relief Peace dollar. I think a Flying Eagle cent would be neat, too.

    1. With everything going on now the Continental dollar has more meaning to me than ever.

    2. A high relief peace dollar would be great too, engraved to the sharpness of a Morgan dollar.

I would be happy enough if the American gold eagle bullion coin used the the original liberty instead of the cartoon-ish thin version with the egg shaped head (+ hair floating on top) ...

That would be a nice choice. But.....from all the depictions that I have seen of that coin, I do not think it was Gasparro at his best. The theme is terrific. The execution of the design not so much. Either way, good choice.

Some of it was the size of the coin but if it had been selected I’m sure he would have refined it a few more times. It still wouldn’t have circulated but it may not have been accused of scaring young children, either...

    For me, none of them.

I did buy a 2014 JFK gold half dollar because the coin brought back fond memories of my youth. Beyond, that won't be buying any of the gold "off-metals" if they are offered. > @Zoins said:

Yes, it was a re-make of the double thick fantasy piece the mint made in 1907. It was an experiment to see if they could bring up the high relief detail with one blow. The coins were not legal because it would have taken an Act of Congress have the diameter of the $20 gold reduced to the size of the $10 gold and then made double the thickness to bring it up to weight.

I had a chance to see the two existing examples which were on display at the Smithsonian. The 2009 piece was very good copy of those coins, which might be expected since the mint was able to use the real thing for their computer – laser created copies.

For those who are unfamilar, here is the coin the mint issued in 2009.

And here are the out of focus shots I took through that glass at the Smithsonian of the real thing.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I was excited by the 2009 UHR until I realized it wasn’t going to be 90% gold and the finish wasn’t going to be more satiny. I wanted a full recreation of the look of the original.

Anyway, another thing for gold treatment... the silver American Eagle in gold might be very interesting.

The original didn't have In God We Trust while the 2009 UHR did have this motto so the designs are actually different.
