Some Old Favorites

I was traveling down Memory Lane and thinking about some of the coins I've collected over the years. I don't own any of them now, but I think they are still fun to look at! Here are some pictures. I won't say what they are or their grade or anything, just the coins themselves. See any you like? See any you don't like?

The first one I am the least crazy about just because of the missing detail but I am guessing that one might be tough to find with better detail? I would have to enlighten myself on them to learn more. What can you tell us that drew you to these coins? What are the most historical features/events that got you interested in them? I'll have to dig out the dusty Red Book to see what is said about the Hibernias etc. It's been a long time.

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

Ah yes, that first coin...it's a 1722 Hibernia Halfpenny, Rocks Right, graded VF25 by PCGS.

"...the one truly distinctive variety in the Redbook Hibernia series with a dramatic and unusual rock outcropping on the right side of the reverse (perhaps added by the engraver to conceal an error in the legend?). With just 12 specimens traced in all grades combined, this is a rare and important piece - and another coin which almost NEVER appears in dealer inventories."

The coin is ex Bowers November 1988 sale of the Norweb Collection, lot #3424.

With only 12 examples, it must have been pretty special to be the caretaker of that one for a while.

@MidLifeCrisis I recall some time ago CRO had a Hibernia with Rocks for sale. Was that your coin? (And what you wrote about it, was that from CRO?)

I definitely agree with @keyman64 that it must have been really cool to be the guardian of that coin!

Oh, and the third coin: That is one of the reddest Hibernias I've seen. Super nice coin.

The coin I posted was a CRO coin and the part of my write-up that's in quotes came from CRO.

I don't know if the coin you are referring to that CRO had for sale was my coin.

I did really enjoy being the guardian of that coin. It was indeed one of my favorites.

If you could reacquire an “old friend” any coin from the past, which would it be?

Very nice old coins... I really like the 1761 with the shield detail on the reverse.... I like them all, but really enjoy clarity of design details... Thanks for showing them... real treasures. Cheers, RickO
