Are posters aware that Activity messages are visible to everyone?

When I click on the "activity" heading, I see messages of offers to buy, or meet up, with phone numbers included? I see maybe ~1-2 messages a day, and I don't click that segment very often.
Don't know if they are PM's or what. Most recent one was leeroybrown giving out phone number to someone else.
Not sure if this is supposed to be private or not.

Wow, wasn't aware of this. I thought a PM was just that...a private message.
I see it too. I think it when a person adds a comment about someone on their profile INSTEAD of sending them a message. WOW

Yes, looks like a security bug in the forum software. The PMs are private as in you can’t just look at them on a profile. But it appears that they aren’t being excluded from forum activity. That is a big hole indeed and something that should be fixed pronto.
This is very concerning. I know folks put their home addresses in these as well, if they are conducting a transaction. Yikes...
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
Thank goodness others see it.
I thought they made me a mod, and I forgot.
What you're seeing isn't a PM, it's a post on the Activity section of a user's profile page. I noticed that's a common mistake. For a PM you have to click on the little "message" link in the middle right to the left of the user's avatar.

Corrected thanks to MS70.
Do these people care if everyone on the forum can see it?
You’re probably right. So I would call it a usability bug at the very least. If people are making the mistake as often as they appear to be then there should be something modified/added to help steer people to the right place.
You're right. If you click the person who the message was sent to, you can see they are all added comments on that user's profile.

I care. On occasion, I have written some indiscrete things. I will keep my candid thoughts to myself in the future, or use Morse code or pig Latin.
Early this month, a forum member sent a PM to another member, and suddenly 9 more of us were unintentionally given access to the discussion, much to our amusement.

Maybe a big PRIVATE MESSAGE icon would be good. I'm not sure if anyone actually uses the activity thingy.

I see ~1-2 messages a day, clicking that button.
I just clicked the Activity button. Yikes! Maybe I should get an alt, a wig, a burner phone, and out-of-town post office box and.....

It's amazing how many people don't realize that to PM someone you have to click on the Message button...

People are writing on user's WALLS, not sending PM's.
Using our friendly local Mod's profile as an example....

ricko there's a new message for you.
Of course, I couldn't help myself. There is indeed a new PM for him.

It's called posting to a member's "wall" and yes it is public. Many, members do not realize that after you click on a member's icon you have to do a second click on "message" to send a private message. The accidental poster to the "wall" cannot remove the post but the wall's owner can. Just send him a PM asking him to remove it.

The wall should be eliminated, it really serves no purpose that a thread or thread post does not serve.

VISIBLE ???
AIYEEEE !!!
Is it safe?
What @ms70 said.
@ChrisH821 Has got it right.
May I add that there are TWO ways to PM:
DO NOT POST PRIVATE MESSAGE BELOW ACTIVITY ON MEMBER'S WALL, as that will be seen by GOD and EVERYONE!!

My Wall says "There's not much happening here."
Maybe that is a good thing from a privacy point of view. LOL
Writing messages on walls is FINE just as look as they are INTENDED to be public.

I have posted about this numerous times on the boards and even posted a thread to let people know and to make certain they can avoid it. However, given the nature of this software and the nature of folks' understanding of the services they use, this will be an ongoing issue.

I think it is fun to read the messages. People are much more candid in PM.
Yes, I have had several messages on the activity board...I do reply to them, since they were coin related questions. I am sure many people think it is private...and @TomB has pointed out in the past that it is not...Cheers, RickO
Interesting, I didn't know that, thanks for the heads-up !!!
