    1861-D $5. Very tough coin with a lot of history with both Union and Confederate production ( no way to tell them apart btw). I have seen a few but never one I liked. Great thread

    @PerryHall....A friend whom I trusted (former forum member) told me he actually saw a '64 D Peace Dollar...Never knew anyone that has seen a unicorn :D Cheers, RickO

    The US Treasury says that all were melted. I'd have to see one in hand before I believe any survived. You can certainly feel free to dream. I have a granddaughter that believes there are unicorns.

    1916 D Mercury in a 67 fb. Being it's a dream coin, make it a 68fb.

    I've been wanting this one since 2017 and was finally able to get it this week. Just 15 of these were struck and it seems many fewer released.

    It is in safe-keeping in Vienna. Last year I was changing trains to go to a wedding and didn't have time to stop and visit. But in 2014 the Kunsthistorisches Museum staff arranged a viewing for me. I hope to have another chance to see it and say hi in the next few years.

    The Kunsthistorisches Museum has a wonderful coin and medal collection. Some of the Schauthaler there are amazing.

    I was there in spring 2019 as part of an extended European vacation. Saw the excellent coins and medals room but didn't take any photos there. I did take several shots of the building itself and various art and artifacts. I've always liked how European museums allow artists in to paint copies of masterpieces, and the quality of the reproductions is always amazing! The one pictured below is clearly in an early stage.

    There were a small number of these struck. I remember seeing one in person at an ANA years ago. In the background of the exhibit, there was a video running on a loop showing the creation of the coin. The surprising thing was that finishing of each of the coins were executed by hand! All in all, each one is 50cm in diameter and 2.8cm thick - weighing in at 220 pounds of gold.

    Then, there is this one!

    Created in Australia, the coin is 80cm in diameter and 12cm thick - coming in at 1 full metric ton!

    The US has been following Canada with privy marks, colorization, and others, so I wonder when we'll see a US $100M gold coin!

    My dream coin would be an 1815 large cent. Newly discovered, with documentary proof that it was (perhaps surreptitiously) made at the U. S. Mint as a test coin.
