It needed a home...
Hi guy's, now I know, it's not the best looking coin but I liked it for a few reasons despite the obvious and that carbon spot.
1. The holder it's in. Does anyone know of such a company? 2. It's a Merc. It's history. 3. It does have "FullBands". 4. Something to add to my conversational category. Lol picked up for only $8. What the heck? Also, notice on my first pic (obv.) It does appear to have some color.

You'll never believe this, but their web site is no longer active!
The United States Coast Guard were never known for their coin grading skills.
But a few years ago I did find a 1875-CC 20c BF-1 in one of these Coast Guard holders on eBay. It was graded VG8. I sent it to ICG for variety confirmation, it came back G6 Cleaned.
But for $100, I got a R-5 coin.
Me thinks you paid $ 7.90 too much. Anyone can create a nonsensical labelled slab. And it's filthy with crud to boot. Peace Roy

Good move ... it will not be lonely anymore!
If you like it, and it makes you happy to own it, then go for it. Under the dark color it looks to be a decent grade
HAPPY COLLECTING
Are you being facetious or are you serious? Really? The Coast Guard?

now you need to buy a few more obscure ones to keep it company.
I don't remember ever seeing that slab type so it's probably fairly scarce. Very neat and a nice pick up.

That slab appears to have a harder life than the coin ever did!
If it makes you happy, it can't be that bad!!

The labels seem to be stickers on the outside of the slab.
If you could clean it up a bit (what is all that black stuff?) it would be good as a curiosity.
hang onto it, someday it will be in the Museum of Primitive Coin Grading.
Yeah, maybe it's a Pop. 1? Lol

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line. There are collectors for off brand slabs. For $7 how bad can you really get hurt?
You know, I do believe that black stuff is inside the slab (mold)? Also, the slab has a frost inside the slab as well. Humidity?

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.Lol Forget about the black around the coin. There is NO black! Lol it is the background when I took the pic against a black surface. Geez! Sorry. Here are some better pics in a better lighting. There is some fogging going on though inside the slab?

BETTER? Or no?

Has Hansen seen it?
As you can see based on the surfaces they graded every coin while out at sea with lots of salt air exposure
MUCH better.
The haze or frost inside is likely the aging or deterioration of the soft "gasket".
The coin is still a bit unattractive to me, but since the slab is not as bad as it first appeared I'd say it was OK for $8, but as an unusual slab rather than the coin inside.
Definitely NOT a crack out candidate, since the interest is in the early fly-by-night grading company slab.
Another strange slab from a strange co.

INB I'm sure a co. we can all go by. Lol
Just one more slab to keep for conversation. The Dime at least looks pretty awesome! Even a tad toning starting to come out. Silver as well. $4
Thanks guy's
