Prices at the heritage long beach auction

GazesGazes Posts: 2,315 ✭✭✭✭✭

My very unscientific observation from Thursday night of the coins i followed that they were generally off around 10% the value i thought they would go for. These coins were generally very nice pcgs cac gold coins. A few went for what i thought they would and a couple were a bit stronger. Overall the prices on these coins seemed down a bit. Curious what others observed.

I would agree. Prices seemed slightly off of what i had expected.

I agree and won one lot because of the lower prices.

I was involved in other more critical duties.... Did this impression cover all price tiers? Or just medium to low level coins? Cheers, RickO

They seem to be off to me as well. I won a piece for 20% less than what a similar piece sold for last year.

Which is nice because I would have stopped bidding if it got higher ;)

It seems about right for the times.

My impression came from only gold coins that were in the five figure category

In the Heritage auction yesterday CAC gold was fairly strong. Non CAC was all over the board. Many pieces sold for 60% of retail.

I focused on a dozen coins, none of which went cheap. No gold. A few more in the "commoner" auction tomorrow that I'm watching. Only two priced about right at the next bid level. HA, GC and eBay prices (mid-range) that I have followed do not suggest to me that prices have been recently affected. What I do see, with no data to back this up, is fewer quality coins available.

I agree. I had the same basic sense.

I only followed a few non gold coins but all CAC, and they sold for stronger prices than I had anticipated.

Watched an 1864 Large Motto 2C MS66+ PCGS w/CAC. Prior sale like this was January 2017 for $4,935. Thursday sold for $9,000.

I watched an 1831 Bust Half Dime (Rarity 1), MS66, PCGS with CAC. CDN/CAC retail price guide is $4,500, but this one sold for $6,900.

I also watched the sale of a 1925 Peace Dollar MS67+ PCGS with CAC (the most common date in high grades). The four most recent Heritage sales like this ranged from $7,050 to $11,400. Sold the other day for $25,200!!!!!!!!!!

A day without fine wine and working on your coin collection is like a day without sunshine!!!

Is CAC that different of a market-maker in general? Bean is trusted as worthy for higher $ vs. assessing quality without the bean? (bean-worthy but not beaned). Have we gotten to that point finally? CAC marketing is pushing that way but is that reality on the ground?

Even mid tier coins and higher tier coins haven’t been spared by the overall declining market.

I still love to look at the coin not the holder or sticker. But there seems to be a prevailing sentiment in mid to high range coins that aren’t stickered more why it didn’t sticker as opposed to has it been to CAC or not. I’m not a huge CAC proponent or opponent but recent price history is hard to ignore

Are there as many dealers representing collectors that are checking these out in person? A lot of mid-range auction coins are hit or miss in quality, so it's hard to judge results with fewer trusted parties eyeballing them. IMHO.

I gobbled up a super cool finest known variety (pop 4/0) in a series I collect for $2,640 all in, that last sold at auction almost 2 years ago at Heritage as a pop 2/0 for $6,600 all in. To those registry beginners- the registry is a marathon race, not a sprint!

Congrats! What a great pick up. And great patience as well!

Where are you ranked in the Registry Sets after adding this one?

Anxiously awaiting for you to post it :)

I am guessing that recent events did not allow for in person viewing which may be a factor in lower prices.

That has been true at all the major auctions in the last 3 months

without pictures, prices and any further explanation than a "generic coin(s)" it's hard to know anything about where prices are. it is possible that people won't bid on or up for something they can't view in-hand. it is also possible that much of what is for sale is marginal. but.......................

..........................I can tell you that the things I try to buy do not sell cheaply even though prices are coming down across the board. I like the sig-line that CHD has, so maybe the coins we/you are trying to win and come cheap would be best left alone, lest you find regret for owning them in the years to come. isn't it better to pay a little more for quality than to think you got a bargain??

Buy in haste, Repent in leisure. o:)

Zoins. Thanks for post. I gobbled up ...

    1936 FS-101 Quarter, MS66
Doubled Die Obverse, None Graded Finer

1936 25C Doubled Die Obverse, FS-101, MS66 PCGS. The obverse of this date is strongly doubled, a feature most easily seen on the letters in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.

In my (38) years of hunting for the “major” Washington quarter varieties, I was only able to locate an MS64 as the top grade in this date. And just (2) of these in any MS grade. I believe there had only been (1) other pop top MS66 of this date to ever appear at Heritage auctions since PCGS opened their doors for business and, interestingly, it was auctioned (3) different times at Heritage before achieving the record price of $6,600 for the grade in 2018. Strangely, I do not believe that coin is registered to any registry set to this date (unless it is under a different serial number after a crack out attempt for example).

The one I purchased this week is now the plate coin for the variety on Coinfacts (would anyone be nice enough to pull up the picture here of the MS66 brilliant coin). PCGS elected to not include the 1936 DDO in the major variety set when it created that quarter Registry set 20+ years ago, but I always felt it deserved “major variety” status. You be the judge after looking at the doubling on “In God We Trust” if someone is nice enough to post that pic here.

Zoins- My Washington Quarter Sets are still generally mostly all “top 5” sets, with now just a smattering of #1’s remaining after Hansen and one or two others “got ultra serious” on these sets. I’m still ahead on the silver Type B and C Registry set and the MS 1965-1998 Clad quarters, but I don’t recall anything else right now. I’m comfortably running #2 or 3 or 4 or 5 in many of these marathon races now, but enjoying the view Very much from that vantage point. 😊. I might even submit my set to try to get some upgrades without have to buy new coins. I haven’t done much (if anything) in the way of submitting my set coins for upgrade over the past 5 years so some day, one day, I must contribute to PCGS’ bottom line with performing that task!
