Try grading this slabbed 1918-d buffalo nickel, you may be surprised at the grade on the holder!

Take a stab at grading this 1918-d buffalo nickel. Looks like a nice coin to me. And with a full horn.

    VF-35 to XF-40ish. Strike looks a little weak near peripheries. Tail merges into body, with a flat, non 3D tail. Flatness on Black Diamonds head due to strike.

    The die looks like it's in a mid to late die state on reverse.

    Don't forget: this is grading from a picture, although I think it's easier with a circulated specimen.

    Just based on your comments I'll go F15 - Grading seems to be all over the map on these earlier Buffalos.

    I'm guessing there's a lot more luster that what's showing up in your pics. Probably AU something.

    Typical weak reverse strike any other year would get an xf for the flat hip area but with this one a nice strike on obverse I'd say MS60 Just a guess. It is a nice 18! Not many coins make it into the 60 range most go to AU 55 or 58.

    Here is the slab -- and as some have said above really does not appear to be much if any actual wear on it!

    Somehow I knew that the coin would be in a new ANACS slab, I have seen some real head scratchers in that generation holder.

    Anacs graded that coin by the detail, and not by surface preservation. I would have guessed au-50 to 53. The anacs slab photos look more xf45ish

    @Walkerguy21D ... Agree... humor has its place in grading and numismatics. Let's just get to the point... Some grades just don't pass the straight face test. See BUFFNIX for exhibit A.

    FWIIW... I see 45 as a reasonable grade just to participate in the Straight Face Test

    The grade was not as ridiculous as my F15 guess but it's just another great example of how Buffalo Nickel collectors hate the grading room. Just like most others here, l agree the coin looks solid XF or AU in the photos.

    It's a perfect example of why the horn should never have been used as a grading point. I once had an 18/17-D that had 3/4 horn and luster. It was graded raw as a Fine. This was well before slabs were used.

    The guesses before the slab posted averaged to 48.

    It's an odd number because I rounded BuffaloIronTail's VF-35 to XF-40ish guess to 37.

    ANACS at times confuses strike with wear. I recall an ANACS AU55 1866 25c I picked up around 16 yrs ago. Despite the horribly struck centers as most of these are, the fields and rims had full luster. Coin was MS63ish. Too bad the coin was AT to boot which negated some of the mis-grade.

    I’m going to be dreaming about that tonight, seeing it at a small show, and the dealer demanding full Fine Bid for it, and not a penny less.....

    But yes old school grading demanded a full horn for VF.
    Must’ve been tough for those guys with original ms 26D nickels only showing half horns, when they tried to sell them.

    I think Buffalo Nickels were the 1st series to break away from the old Brown and Dunn Grading standards. Others call this grade inflation. While there is grade inflation...it's hard to negate some of the MM earlier Buffalo Nickels that were struck with worn out reverse dies and are fully lustrous Uncs! This has gone both ways(26-S's come to mind)...the reason I didn't guess the grade. The grade of this coin above VF all depends on the surfaces and luster IMHO which could not be determined from the pictures.

    Kind of surprised at the low grade, really thought it was closer to a weakly struck AU 50-53.

    In spite of the striking issues, in my opinion, the coin has only minimal wear.

    My pre-reveal guess was 50, thought I could see enough luster for that grade.
