It looks like the US Mint will start doing colorized coins

Color coins? Actual Toned coins by the Mint? That would definitely be breaking news! Love it. <3

Yeah that is a Pandora's box. Take the RCM...the number of colorized coins has gone through the roof over the last decade or so and alot of the 'collections' are really hokey. Don't get me wrong, some of them are very attractive and I do own some but many are not worthy collectibles, just marketing kitsch IMO. Still they must sell a lot of them as they continue to make them. It would be sad for the US Mint to travel down this path and I hope they do not.

If the US Mint is willing to open that Pandora's Box, I can assure you that they have no plans of ever closing it.

This thread will be turning into my recent thread/poll about "Toned Coins". Clearly, the final polls showed an overwhelming vote for the toned coins, rather for the non-toned coins. In which, the Mint is taking a liken to as well.Lol 🌈🌈🌈🌈

I am sure there will be a lot more coins for flippers. Count me out.

In the not so distant future, I can see our dear Host grading these special looking coins in their own little category. I think, that would be awesome! ;)
    How about it, PCGS?

Hopefully they will be proof so I won’t need them for my half dollar unc registry set.. 😵

They announced they were doing this some time ago. I don’t have a problem with them doing it but I’ll never buy/own one. But some people like them so more power to them. Considering we will never get out of memorializing presidents in circulating coins at this point, the designs will just stay rather staid and boring and trying to minimize offending people.

Was there a public survey on this? How can a coin be graded if the engraving is covered in krylon? Peace Roy

I don't know. It's nearly impossible to flip RCM products and the mintages are down right infinitesimal on some of those products.

I was guessing this wouldn't be far behind after the privy marks (also introduced earlier by Canada)

Seems like the US Mint is following world Mints now.

The US has 1 more step to go beyond colorizing, which is to license trademarked logos and characters like the following.

I know some B&M dealers that can't wait for the US Mint to do this because these are the coins their YNs want.

  • PocketArtPocketArt Posts: 1,335 ✭✭✭✭✭

Well, I guess that's one way for US mint to eliminate milk spots... :D

  • ms70ms70 Posts: 13,956 ✭✭✭✭✭

All we can hope for is the aftermarket colorizers successfully sue the mint to not do it.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

At least they are going to be round and colorized!

I think they should just make a large dollar sized basketball coin out of copper. It would be the right color without the need for paint / enamel.

The more they issue this stuff, the further away from it I get. Of late I have collecting coins of the ancient Roman emperors. Some of them were much more colorful than any modern colorized coin. For some some them reading about their lives is like going to an R-rated movie.

I suppose that one day we can expect Full Color, Curved , and crafted out of Fine Porcelain ? Wonderful.

I've often thought the Artists Illustrations of new Coin Designs looked too much like Dinner Plate Art.

It’s in the middle part of the official notification from the mint that I got in my Snail mail box. I was about to throw it away when I saw that part.

I was out on the mints offerings as it was too much drama to buy dreck.

I see no problem with it if it's well done. I may get the half and dollar if the price is reasonable.

I'm all in favor. These are FUN for a lot of people.

A lot of people felt that the proliferation of stamp types killed the stamp hobby. Actually, I think it was the negativity around the proliferation of stamp types that killed the hobby.

Stamp guys are even more arrogant and self-righteous than coin guys. It's TRUE! You would go to a stamp show and some newbie collector would want to look at material that wasn't "classic" and they would actually get an earful from whichever old curmudgeon happened to be within earshot. It really turned off a lot of people.

You don't have to buy it. But we should at least embrace the crossover potential.

I'll wait to see them before passing judgement. I think some of the colorized coins look quite nice, actually.

  • koynekwestkoynekwest Posts: 10,048 ✭✭✭✭✭

Those Austrian silver/niobium coins are very nice. I have a complete set. But I don't consider them to be colorized. They are composed of two different metals. Luxembourg also has a nice version of these, struck by the Austrian Mint.

Although I have no interest in collecting these things, I applaud the Mint's willingness to explore new directions.
