I finally found a 1940 S to fill that hole. This one is almost fully struck through the central obverse with a nice full hand and thumb, and all gown lines visible. It is indeed tough to find a very nice strike for this year/mm, I've been looking for one for a while now. This one is a MS 65.

    I had come to find out the 40-s can be just as tough to find as the 41-s As far as strike.

    Yours is about as nice as I’ve ever seen. Here’s mine. It is also a MS 65. The strike is pretty decent and the luster is awesome. It is in a 2.1 OGH:

    That is an excellent coin! I've been looking for a well struck 66, but that hole is still empty. I think finding a well struck 40-S is as hard to find as a weakly struck 1936 Philly half.

    I would never have thought that a 1940-s existed that well struck. Full head detail too. Looks to have original surfaces....not the usual dipped white example. Incredible piece. That coin is probably more valuable than than a MS66 which is priced 3X higher.

    The 40-S 41-S 42-S can be really horribly struck.
    I used to have a really nice 41-S but it unfortunately had an unsightly (to me) patch of die polishing above IGWT in the fields.
    Other than that it was a killer example.
    The dealer I bought it from discounted it because it was "scratched", lol

    WOW! That is indeed one of the best struck 40-S coins I have ever seen. As you know ... super tough attribute on that date/mm. Congrat's on a great coin!

    I think that's the nicest '40 S I've seen. Some of the weak strike coins are luster bombs however. With many you are lucky to detect a hand, let alone a thumb!

    That's a nice one. Here is my PCGS 65, well struck, but looks like yours has less hits than mine
