Show of hands - who still pulls copper cents out of circulation?

jmski52jmski52 Posts: 23,287 ✭✭✭✭✭

I can spot a real cent (95% copper) at a distance, about 90% of the time. There's just something about them. Maybe it's because I consider them real, compared to the zinc cents. I know it's not for the value, mostly nostalgia I think.

Who else still does this? B)

They are easier to notice, one thing is they have a higher relief. I and even detect the half gramme difference by holding them in my hand - just something you get good at whence you have handled many hundreds of thousands of cents by searching them. Such said, I saved them to the point where I had about 500K of them and thence my wife advised me that they had to go.

I still do. When copper was higher I use a coin metal discriminators rigged to a coin counter to rapidly pick out the copper cents. I would buy 2 or 3 $25 bricks of cents and run them through my rig. I found some interesting wheat cents and about 30% copper.

  • mvs7mvs7 Posts: 1,662 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yep, can't help myself. I have a drop jar for them right behind my desk.

  • I do. I even pick them off the ground no matter what they are made of.

When I was heavy into roll searching for varieties, I would pull out every copper cent and COINSTAR the rest. I figured the price of copper would rise, and one day when the government finally lifts the stupid ban on melting US cents, I would be sitting on a veritable fortune.
Instead, I am sitting on a mound of green copper in the basement, like the Statue of Liberty herself fell and broke into a million 3.1g discs

I used to think that way about wheat cents. When I got to 130,000 of them it made me sick to my stomach. Never again.....

I save wheat cents...and even remove the one's @carabonnair puts in the 'take a cent, leave a cent' tray :D One day, when I have some spare time, I will go through them (major task)....Cheers, RickO

I still pull copper cents out when I get them. I don’t do a lot of transactions in cash, though, so I don’t run into as much. My wife does and I’ve tried to get her to pull them out but she always forgets.

I put all the bonus coins sent on eBay buys. Two coin purchases when I only wanted the one, etc., back into circulation. The darn things just keep showing up. Proofs also. They are NOT worth keeping. Get rid of the darn things and get some kid or someone on a budget a chance to start a collection - like you did.

I save quarters, dimes and nickels instead. And, will keep wheat cents found in circulation. Although I do still have a few containers full of cents that I have accumulated over the years.

    No, I don't.

I also don't pick up cents or nickels lying on the ground and sometimes I don't even pick up a dime (I'll definitely pick up a quarter).

I'm not a wealthy person, but considering all the $100's of dollars we waste every year, I just don't see the point of picking up a penny.

Hello everyone, my name is David and I’m a hoarder (just kidding).

This is the 3rd 5 gallon Home Depot bucket of pre-82 cents I’ve been working on. I find it relaxing to coin roll hunt and figured it is worth pulling out coppers as I do it. Life has gotten busier the last year or two so this bucket has been in progress for like two years now.

I do and enjoy it. I separate them by year and store in bins or coin tubes. I'm a Lincoln penny fan by hobby, I have every Lincoln from 1909 to 2009 with the exception on the 1922 no D or the 1955 double die.

Keeps me out of trouble. Enjoy your hobby
