Is the Long Beach show on or off?

Website says it’s on but I hear it could be cancelled. Anyone know with certainty?

Living in California it’s highly unlikely there will be a Long Beach show. We’re still in lockdown with the governor looking to gradually ease restrictions beginning next week.

Stay tuned for a likely cancelation.

The last I heard from Taryn on April 26th, in response to my April 26th email below, was:

    Hi Greg,

That’s the latest update. Once we have official word on cancellation we will email, broadcast and post on all our social media and website. Nothing to report yet. Still waiting for the convention center to inform us.

    HI Taryn,

I received the attached email on March 30th- thank you.

I have not gotten an update since, but saw the following on CCE, so did you send another update out? If so, I did not receive it.

Subject: RE: LB Weekly Update 4/17

    Hello Dealers,

I wanted to check in with you this week to update you on where we are at with our June show. To be completely transparent, we are in such an odd time and an unprecedented reality with all of this. Our governor recently stated that large gatherings are forecasted to return in the Fall if things continue to trend positively in our State. He and his team of experts in Sacramento and in every County are studying six criteria to determine our return to normal. What all of us know is that our return to normal is something of a trap to think about because OUR normal is going to be different from this new normal.

So what can I tell you? As of now, the Long Beach Convention Center isn’t releasing us for our agreement for June. We are waiting for a day in the near future when they extend their May 15th closure date to include our June dates but as of right now it hasn’t happened. I will let you know within minutes of getting that official cancellation so that you can cancel your hotel rooms, flights etc. We will forward your deposits and payments to September and look forward to our future time together.

In the meantime, I want to assure you of a few things. I will be spending this time away from you to educate myself on the new normal. I will be following other shows VERY closely as they return to convention centers all over this Country. I will be reaching out to other show coordinators post shows to ask what worked for them. What would they do differently? What new resources did they require to keep their dealers and public safe, be compliant to new mandates etc.?

My personal pledge to you is that I want to be as useful as possible. Would it help you if I taught you how to use Zoom so you could have the ability to video conference customers and have more face to face interactions? Do you know how to make a website for yourself? Do you know how to upload your merchandise to online platforms? What else can I do during this time to help you grow and adapt to our new normal?

I am here for you. I’d love to hear from you and see your faces. We are all in this together and the support is twofold. I want you to be safe, but I also want you to be successful. I realize it’s hard to do both. Believe me, it is for me too. We are all in such a vulnerable time but we must use our personal resources to help ourselves and help each other.

Please look forward to hearing from me each week with updates and words of encouragement. If you have anything you want to chat about or any questions, never hesitate to reach out.

    Stay safe,

I had a customer from Washington tell me over the weekend it was cancelled....I have no idea!

Doesn't seem to be officially cancelled yet... but zero chance it's happening.

Not sure what the hold up on cancelling is... but again, zero chance the June shows is happening... I'm a dealer at the show and I will certainly not be at my table!

And many other dealers/collectors who need to travel to Long Beach from other parts of the country... zero chance they're getting on planes in a few weeks to come out to SoCal for this even if the county/state would let it take place.

Most other SoCal shows I know of in July and August are already cancelled... hopefully we can have the September Long Beach, but I wouldn't bet on it.

    Hope all are doing well...

Agree. September is a best case scenario. Hope all is well Mike!

BTW where is Hall C? Same configuration? Permanent?

Hall A is the usual hall... Entrance to Hall A and B is the same spot.

Hall C is connected... but the entrance is on the other side of the building, probably a half mile walk around the convention center. Different loading docks too. I'm sure many people would park and go in the wrong spot... would have been a fun time with all figuring that out, probably a blessing in disguise not having the June show. Smaller hall too with all of us having different tables.

    :)

Even if they could launch the show next month, attendance would likely be drastically reduced, for both dealers and attendees. So what’s the point.

I’d love to go to a LB Show, but I’m not DYING to go.

    Take care,
    Dave

Well now, the lack of shows is one thing I have endured for years now...and show reports have helped to ease the pain (though not completely). Now I do not even have show reports...Welcome to the dreary world of RickO show deprivation.... :D;) Cheers, RickO

No doubt the hold up on official cancellation is the wait for the Long Beach Convention Center (LBCC) itself to extend their event cancellation decree past the Expo dates as mentioned in Taryn's note. This would release the Expo sponsors from all contracts with the LBCC and probably most of the outside vendors as well (depending on how the contracts are written). If the Expo pulled out before any official LBCC or County or State of CA shutdowns, the Expo would still be bound by the terms of the contract (all subject to exceptions during these strange times).

We ran into the same situation with a show scheduled in early April but in our case the host event center was quick to cancel all events well in advance.

I don't see it happening. Hopefully, September will be on. I didn't attend February due to tax season (which in retrospect, was probably a good thing). I haven't bought or sold anything in over three years, but I enjoy doing a meet and greet with people in the business / hobby that I otherwise do not see, and it's also a neat thing to be able to hold in my hand a truly magnificent coin that I know I'll never own. The only change I see going forward is that I won't be taking the Metrorail to Long Beach anytime soon, which is too bad, but it is what it is..
