It seems to be quite large but may be a silversmith's mark.

I don’t recall seeing that counterstamp before, but I like it — especially on that old quarter! :)

I'm addicted to exonumia ... it is numismatic crack!

I have not seen that one before...looks interesting... a lot more than just letters. Cheers, RickO

Looking more closely, there appear to be shamrocks and a harp on the countertamp in addition to the letters. Irish hallmark?

    All glory is fleeting.

Could it be Irish? the counterstamp seems to include a harp and a pair of clovers.

Unique. It has been there a long time. Very interesting.

I tried to do some digging but was unable to come up with anything reliable. I thought I might have been onto something when I came up with the name Peter Clarke Daniel, who was an Irish silversmith working in S. Africa during the mid-19th century, but none of his hallmarks appeared sufficiently similar, other than the "PD" portion. Unfortunately, the coin isn't mine. It was for sale on eBay and ended up selling for $360. I elected to pass, but was tempted to jump into the fray... Cool piece though.

...what if it is not a silversmith mark? what other trade used makers marks punches?

Interesting, seems to have a lot of elements for a private counterstamp, but I have no idea what it could signify if it is a countermark. Hope you can identify it!

This P D countermark appears to be listed in the book Merchant and Privately Countermarked Coins by Gregory G. Brunk (2003 Edition). I can't tell for sure from the photo you provided but it seems to me to be a match.

Brunk lists this under his Canada section, P D on Page 23.

"The plow and branch of this countermark are weakly struck, and the later may be a flower. Both Blacksmith tokens are Wood-33."

Plow / P.D / Branch (all in Serrated Circle) (D-26)
    Blacksmith Token (2)
    English Halfpenny: George III (Counterfeit)

There are two photos of this countermark on Blacksmith tokens, and the countermark appears to match the photo on your 1818 U.S. Quarter. @Wahoo554, Congratulations on your find!

Looks like we have a match!

"Gold is money, and nothing else" (JP Morgan, 1912)

"“Those who sacrifice liberty for security/safety deserve neither.“(Benjamin Franklin)

"I only golf on days that end in 'Y'" (DE59)

Very interesting, thanks for the research. I didn’t win the auction for the coin, but always cool to gain a better understanding of these historic countermarks.
