Old PCI photo-certified holder.

I don't have much experience with these holders, so would like to hear your opinion. I've been curious about these for a while, but haven't had a reason to purchase one until I saw this 8 Reales, my primary collecting focus, being offered.

Pictures are not fantastic, so I'm a bit anxious to see the coin in-hand.

Do you think it's a cleaned / hairlined dog, or did PCI grade to a higher standard back then?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

    At the time PCI used these slabs, they did a good job grading. I think you will be happy.

    The coins in the old PCI slabs were mostly fairly conservatively graded but each coin should be evaluated on its own merrits just like NGC or PCGS slabbed coins. That's a neat old slab---there aren't too many like it around anymore.

    Perry, do you know if PCI was heavily into World Coins back then? This is really the first example of an 8 Reales I've seen come-up on my radar in years. And I am rather meticulous when it comes to checking all the new / upcoming auctions and sales.

    I have cracked a few coins from their PCI slabs and have gotten comparable grades from PCGS. Also I had a $20 Liberty that PCI graded "MS64" that turned out to be a fake when I submitted it for crossover.

    I would not be shocked to see a coin from an old holder like that get graded 62+ all day long.

    There are a lot of world coins in the old photo PCI holders. I think the majority of the coins were US, but I have seen a lot of world coins as well.

    It could get bumped 2-3 points up

    I have always liked old PCI holders. I have cracked a bunch and always had good results. Every one has graded the same at PCGS. The catch is you can buy them at a discount because of the plastic.

    All of them I've seen have been pretty accurately graded. And just about all silver coins in these holders show similar rim toning on the areas of the coin near the paper photo insert, particularly on the reverse of the coins. Looks like your coin has that too.

    I've got one of those I bought from a forum member a few years ago....here is an old, crappy, photo I took of it. I like it MUCH better in hand.

    I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    The coin is in and it's pretty nice. Way too bright for my taste, plus it's a Peruvian and not Mexican, but solid for the grade.

    How did that work out for you?

    I just came across some gold in one. I'm very happy with my purchase. I lost out on something I really wanted but ended up with this so I call it a win.

    I should have picked up one or two of these when I used to go to shows in the PNW...A nice holder and of the one's I looked at, the grading seemed correct. Cheers, RickO

    I had a 1892 CC Morgan graded AU55 in one of these holders. I got the same grade at PCGS when I cracked it out.. mh

    I just bought a 1989 no-P Washington quarter with a clip in one of these holders, the seller had a few others w/o clips in the same holders. They are definitely an interesting chapter in the history of certifications, a bunch of different companies licensed the patent and made versions of these.

    The Accugrade slab is a three-compartment slab and covered by their patent (now long expired). The PCI slab is a TWO compartment slab, which gets around the Accugrade slab patent.

    When Hallmark went out of business, PCI bought the assets (the small slab with the cut off corners) and switched. I don't remember who bought their old tech and who licensed it from them but it was used by INS, Global, and several others.

    That's the kinda reckless buying advice that I live for.




    I'll get better pics when she comes but I'm 1000% totally okay if it is an MS65 AGE. Never gonna crack it out anyway. My wife already loves it and it's not even here yet.

    That's the first generation of PCI with the grade on the photo and no information in the blank box on the reverse.

    Later on, they took the grade off the photo and put the cert# on the back too. Finally, they added a bar code on the reverse.
