Morgan and Bust Half newps

Picked these up recently. Many have heard of or are familiar with the 1891-CC VAM 3 "Spitting Eagle" variety. VAM 3 is probably more common than all other 91-CC die pairs combined, so the Spitting Eagle, while a Top 100 variety for its coolness has long been known not to be rare. A few years ago that changed. It turns out there is another obverse used with the spitting eagle reverse. Referred to as VAM 7, it differentiated by date location (it is a "far" date) and a spike of metal on the E in LIBERTY. This obverse accounts for maybe a couple percent of the spitting eagles out there. The reverse die is slightly polished down, making the "spit" a touch weaker.

PCGS 55 (slight planchet flaw 8:00 reverse)

Also picked up an 1824/1 Bust 50c in 53

    That's a sweet 24-101, John. Very wholesome.

Great images of awesome coins. I didn't know about VAM-7 and will check it out on VAMWorld and start looking for it!

Nice coins and great pictures....cannot make out the 'spit' on that one, but perhaps just the angle of the picture... Cheers, RickO

    The 91-CC is a V-7.

Thanks. The "spit" is straight down from the tip of the beak. In the picture above, it shows up as a small disturbance in the field one might confuse with a hit, especially since there are a couple out in front of the beak. It seems that clicking on the picture doesn't enlarge it, so if you right-click and open in a new tab, you should be able to see it more easily.

@messydesk....Thanks for the response.... I do see it now, I thought that was part of the hit in front of the beak. Thanks again for the great pictures. Cheers, RickO
