Ebay scam attempt.

ironmanl63ironmanl63 Posts: 1,974 ✭✭✭✭✭

I sold a coin on ebay earlier today. Printed shipping label and packaged. Put it with mail for post office. A little while ago I get a message on Ebay message system which states I would like you to ship to a different address. My cousin has covid I have to help him blah blah. Lists another address and claims if you do not want to ship it there please cancel order. So I am like WTF I am not going to cancel the order or ship to a different address. I figure I would contact Ebay before I do anything.

I went back to the original sale to make sure everything looks OK. I go back to his message and notice the name on the message is different from the buyers. There is the scam. Somehow he found the sale and sent me a message to change the address. If I do not notice the different name he has me. I sent him a nice return message and blocked his user ID.

I would bet this works from time to time. Thought I would share with the group.

    I agree...good catch.

Just curious, what was the the "nice return message" before you blocked?

    Sure, no problem?
Sorry, can't do that per Ebay rules?
    Go away you scammer loser?

that is easy to do. Just go to recently closed auctions and message seller about item.

did you check out the ebayer that messaged you? are they a new member?

Good catch. I recently sold a coin to someone from Russia, had to use Google translate (Lots of copying & pasting!).
They bought the coin but didn't submit any form of payment. I contacted ebay and they said I'd have to wait several more days before I could cancel the order. The real problem with all this is you lose almost a weeks time not to mention the hassle. Saved me from going to the post office and spend extra to tundra tribe in Siberia! Is there a scam involving having a listing pulled?

Scammers are going wild. They know that company call centers are shut down and it is difficult to check on transaction histories. In addition to things like the one in this thread be sure to watch your credit card billing very carefully.

So far as eBay sales are concerned ... never ship to a second address.

I remember years ago, Ebay sent out a message to never ship to alternate address as risk is all yours. I have obeyed that rule.

Same scam has been attempted against me twice in the past few months. Always a buyer with 0 or 1 feedback, but mine were for items over $1000. I never even considered changing the delivery address. I called Ebay immediately on both of them and the users were NARU'd almost instantaneously by Ebay.

My parameters are set to only allow US (50 States) based customers to bid on my auctions. I'm not willing to deal with all the hassles that are involved in overseas transactions.

Watch out for Canadian bidders who use US addresses. They are hard to spot. Just look at all bidders country of origin.

Some Canadians who live near the border will use PO boxes on the US side to save on shipping. That will probably decline now that they'll be paying sales tax by doing that.
