At the recent Stack's Bowers auction, I was able to purchase the final piece for my small set of Seth E. Ward Sutler tokens from Fort Laramie! I already had the 25 cent and 50 cent denominations which are rarity-7 (11-20 known) and appear on the market occasionally. However, the 10 cent denomination is a rarity-9 (2-4 known) and this example is the first I know of that has appeared on the open market. It is graded XF-40 BN by NGC and while there is one known example that is AU, I am thrilled to be able to have an example in my collection and complete the set! I have been searching for this token for a couple years and even asked Steve Hayden to be on the look out for one. I was shocked when I noticed it a few months ago in the Stack's Bowers auction and knew I had to have it.

    There were made around the Civil War time period (1861-1865). Possibly a few years before or after the war. Seth E. Ward became the sutler at Fort Laramie in 1857 and held that position until 1863. He was again sutler from 1865 to 1871 with his title changing in 1867 to Post Trader instead of Sutler. He issued the tokens while sutler so they were issued sometime between 1857 and 1867. The tokens are listed in the book on Civil War Sutler Tokens and Cardboard Scrip.

    From the article, this is why I thought they were made earlier.
    Ward formed a partnership with William Guerrier in 1848. Their firm, Ward and Guerrier, provided goods and supplies to the new influx of people moving westward to settle.

    those are really interesting tokens and I enjoyed reading your article linked in the OP. Considering they were used on the frontier, the scarcity is understandable. Congratulations on completing the set. Ward's birthplace, Campbell Co. Va, is very familiar to me. It's close to Lynchburg, Appomattox, and my mother's home town.
