Seated Liberty Half Dollar - Guess the grade! GRADE REVEALED

Was thinking about sending this one in for reconsideration when our host re-opens for business. In the meantime...what grade would you assign? Based on the pics only, of course ;)

Grade revealed below!

Based on your reconsideration comment, I'll guess it was slabbed 58.

    I can’t judge luster but I’ll go 64.

AU-58. Every point on the design where either a weak strike or friction wear shows up is "flatish" with a change of color. My guess is either slabbed as a 58 or 62. Grading is subjective so crack it out and offer it as an MS-63 or 64 and sleep like a baby. :)

Since the grade was a disappointment I will say 61. And if my guess is accurate I would try again. Good luck when you resubmit

From the photos I say 58 if the details show wear, ms63 - 64 if they are just weakly struck, looks like nice fields. Not my area so what do I know.

I would call it AU58. But I could see it in a MS62 slab. Looks clean enough to have been a MS64 or higher at one time, but to me there is rub indicating some light circulation. Can't tell anything about luster from the photo but I will assume it has some.

I like it as a possible 62 or 63 but the photos seem to show a bit of honest circulation wear in the expected areas (knees, breast, head on the obverse, lower arrowhead on the reverse) along with a few contact marks so 58 is certainly in play. Anything lower should be resubmitted, IMO.

I am in the 63 camp... though the reverse does seem to show wear on the fletching (arrow feathers). Being the reverse, it likely counts for less. Cheers, RickO

I thought that I seen a slight rub on the right thigh and breast, but there is a fine line between 58 and 62. I like it as 58 since I am building an Everyman Type Set.

Heck no. Dealers loved to buy my AU coins decades ago. I tell the story in class about a famous major dealer who looked through my coin book and asked the price of a 1917 Type I SLQ. I told him he didn't want that one because it was AU! He persisted and I persisted. I finally said OK then, and sold him the coin. He is still considered to be one of the best graders in the business and he knew an MS-65 (highest grade back then) FH coin when he saw one. It is probably in a 66 or 67slab today if it was taken care of.

Here's the TrueView for anyone interested. The TV makes it look more like an UNC than the OP's images did, IMHO.

That was my thought. If there's rub at all it's only on the right leg. Definitely worth a re-submission.

You do realize an AU58+ in todays market is worth quite a bit more than a 62. I would send it in for reconsideration for + only myself.

    @RAB said:
Ok, so a fairly broad range of guesses spanning AU55 to MS64! Not too surprising, given that pictures are rarely able to convey the whole story.

To those of you who said 58 – congratulations, PCGS and CAC agree with you!

Here, I think luster is the critical piece of information missing from the pics. It’s fairly decent on the reverse, but the obverse, well…it looks to me like a lot of coins I’ve seen in 58-62.

I love the strike and details, with what I would consider slight weakness on the reverse, as some of you have pointed out, and very slight weakness on the high points of the obverse. If there’s wear on these high points, and I go back and forth on this, then 58 is the right grade from a technical standpoint. But, even then, I could see this coin finding its way into a 62 holder.

So, to sum up, in my opinion, I think the luster holds it back from anything higher than 62, but that is the grade I would be shooting for on reconsideration. Of course, getting it back in a 58+ holder would still be a nice consolation (and probably the highest grade my grading skills would allow me to confidently assign). So…to resubmit or not? I guess I have some time to think about it :)

Thank you again to everyone who shared their thoughts, I really appreciate it!!

There are times for me that it is hard to tell rub from a week strike. This coin is a prime example of that.

My "worry was the thigh and elbow. I think its accurately graded. Disappointing though because if not for the wear looks MS 63/4.

I'm not 100% positive on this, but my understanding is that you can't place an upper limit on the grade assigned by PCGS during Reconsideration. You can specify that you don't want the coin reholdered unless it gets bumped (at least) a full grade, but not the other way around. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm sure the Seated Halves are like the Barber + Bust Halves. They usually sell for a minimum of 63 money...sometimes over 65 money!
