Post the lowest percent top grade cards in your collection.....

Dpeck100Dpeck100 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think this could be a very interesting thread. A lot of my cards don't have a huge population of graded copies so the highest grade example rarely has an extremely low percent relative to the total number of graded copies.

This 1985 Topps WWF #16 Hulk Hogan is a Pop 1 in a PSA 10 with 247 in the population report. This equates to 0.00404% percent of the total graded examples that have the highest grade.

Post your super low percent top grade cards.

Dpeck- always wondered, any idea why they made two Hulks in the 85 Topps set that were identical except for the background color? I've always been partial to the blue even though it's not card #1.

Honestly no clue. Probably just wanted as much Hogan in the set as possible. In the sticker set he is 5 of 22.

Great idea for a thread, but I think you're off by a few decimal points :-). Looking forward to seeing what other people have.

If you divide 1 into 247 on a calculator you get that number. Essentially 40 basis points or 4/10 of one percent.

    @vintagefun

Sweet card. I just checked and there are 2 out of 6 of those graded a 10 so essentially 33 1/3% are a 10 so not exactly a low percent.

  • Options

I guess the best I can do is this one of one PSA 10 with 105 submissions.

  • Options

    @PaulMaul

    That is awesome!

Any card with less than 1% should sell for big bucks in registry sets that are actively collected.

  • Options

Snap. It was never gonna be a great % with only 59 red inks but the 2nd 10 is very recent. Oh well.

@Dpeck100. That’s a pretty solid % on the Hogan! I’ll have to double check mine but I’m probably a 1 or 40 at best which is 2.5%. Anything less than 1% is crazy impressive. Any thing less than 1/2% is mind blowing.

I totally agree. As I said before a ton of cards I own do not have a lot graded and while in many cases that is due to condition sensitivity to begin with they may have a ratio of 3% or higher so finding a card with a high enough population to get under half a perfect isn’t easy.

I would think some cards from the 71 Topps set or another tough issue might be heavily submitted enough and rare enough in high grade to get under 1%.

1% is a tough bar. I have a number of low pop 1960's and 1970's Cowboys that get under the 2% bar, but this one is right at 1% (1.03% to be exact) - one of 4 PSA 10's out of 387 graded:

A few other difficult to find cards (at all) are below - the Champion Cornflakes is a 33% - 1 of 3 ever graded by PSA. The All-American panel is 50% - 1 of 2 ever graded by PSA. Both are top of pops.

That is such a cool logo on the Lilly card with the cartoon cowboy on the horse. I don’t think I would ever try to get it into a new holder if it was my card - with my luck they would look at the bottom right corner and drop me down. What do you think happened there?

  • Options

Even though the Hogan is a lower percentage in a 10 this is my most rare card in high grade with only one 8 and one 9 and those are 2.32% of the outstanding population. The condition sensitivity of the card is so high few get submitted.

I agree re: the logo, it's such a neat one. Regarding the lower right hand corner, I can't say. I'll have to take a trip to the safe deposit box with my 10x loupe and check it out. When I zoom in on the scan it looks like slightly off color there but can't be sure till I look at it in hand.

    Pop 1, 1 higher (a PSA 7) out of 58 graded, so a top 3.45%

If only looking at absolute top grade, this is a pop 15 out of 340 graded, top 4.41%

Much of what I collect has so few submissions, the top pops end up being 30-67% of total.

I wonder if the 1988 Donruss Devon White is the pound for pound champ of this metric we are discussing with only 1 out of 360. What is crazy when looking at the Pop report is there are only 3 PSA 9's and 3 PSA 8's and then 353 PSA 7's.

How on earth did 353 PSA 7's get submitted??? Almost makes you wonder if this is an error.

Interesting thread for sure. I am a Jabbar/Alcindor collector and the one POP report that amazes me is the 1979 Topps card of him. 1 PSA 10 out of 628 submissions .0015 or .15%. And for full disclosure I do not own that card :disappointed: I have always wondered why only one PSA 10 from that card. Seems strange to have only one from such a mainstream set of one of the all time greatest players in NBA history.

  • Options

This is a great looking card. Love how high above the defender he is.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/1979-Topps-Basketball-Kareem-Abdul-Jabbar-10-PSA-9-MINT-PWCC-/401535829373?hash=item5d7d66857d:g:tmsAAOSw3uFa9MEr&nma=true&si=m6%2BT01KBumR%2Fvzr2nQxwHX9CD58%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Just from looking at EBAY it appears the card has tough centering, obvious soft corner issues from the Topps card stock and potentially snow issues in the blue background that can plague it. I wouldn't be surprised if PSA is super tough on the blue background portion of the card.

  • Options

The '79 basketball set is difficult in general, not just the Kareem. Most big names sell higher than their corresponding '78 and even maybe '77 cards.

There still hasn't been a PSA 10 1976 Brett card out of 1979 graded cards.
Don't believe there's been a PSA 10 Fernando rookie yet either.
Pop 1's are relatively easy compared to the zero percenters.

Instead of a one percenter a zero percenter.

    I like it!

1979 OPC Bobby Hull pop 9 out of 210 submissions or about 4.3%. It's not an easy set for any card to get a 9- only about 16% of submissions are 9s.

In terms of outright scarcity only 73 total stickers from the 1989 Swedish Semic World Championship hockey set (a 200 sticker set) have been graded. These are 1 of 1s and are the highest graded of each. (Only 6 total Yzermans and only 5 total Gretzkys.)

Cool thread. Not sure I understand fully but here goes (from a couple angles)...

    One of 22 graded examples...

One of 10 PSA graded examples...

One of 8 PSA graded examples...

These two are single top pop items:

    Thanks for sharing those items.

"Cool thread. Not sure I understand fully but here goes (from a couple angles)..."

The concept was taking the pop of your card and dividing it by the total population and posting the card you have that has the lowest percentage graded that way. If a card has been graded 10 times and there is a pop 1 it is 10%. If a card has been graded 100 times and there is a pop of 1 it is 1%. Etc.

There are plenty of low pop cards but in many cases that is simply because not a large number have been graded.

My example now has 280 total cards graded and only 1 PSA 10. 0.00357 or 0.357%.

Actually this one is better, but still not top pop. I may be scamming the system here since half grades are usually lower pop anyway.

    Great thread.

Mine is a stretch as it’s a Stub and if you count Full tickets it isn’t as special. There are total of 10 graded stubs, 6 higher, but I am bored and wanted show it off anyway 😎.

Unforgettable game and moment for USA!

Total of 10 stubs graded, 6 higher.

Forgive the double post. Found a better low pop. 1 of 49, no 10’s. This was an 8 that I re-subbed and was not expecting more than an 8.5.

Let’s get some more posts. I have exhausted all Tiger King material on Net Flix and Youtube. Show some awesome cards!

Dpeck, Ok here is 1 more.

    2297 total submitted. 8.5 is a pop 2, and there are 27 9’s. 29/2297 = .013
