To Crack or not to Crack?

I am considering filling a Peace album with MS coins. I would have to crack many coins. I am concerned I will decrease the value of my set considerably. Also worried about possible damage to coins out of the slabs. Old holders and stickers are also a concern. But I would love to see all those beauty's raw and in an album.
Help me decide!

I wouldn't crack anything until you know when grading will restart.
One set is enough. Spend any additional money on something else.
Don't crack those coins out (unless you feel lucky, or don't mind unpredictable toning, slide marks, etc.). Make a digital album. I would not assemble a second, circulated set if doing an MS set.

Unless there is some sentimental value in putting them in an album that outweighs a little decline in value I’d make a digital album.
I miss putting coins in Whitman albums when I was little.
BHNC #248 … 130 and counting.
A digital album would be the best route if you plan on eventually selling your coins... They would obviously be of more value - and market acceptable - in the slabs. However, your coins, your decision... Have fun. Cheers, RickO
Get the old Capitol plastics boards and have fun.

I did a digital set of my gold set:

Coins look better in an album, but may be harder to sell, for you or your heirs.
Depends... Are we talking MS64 or MS62 on the tough ones? Complete set? I'd have a tough time cracking out an MS64 better date but ~62 I don't think I would have an issue. Except 34-S, I'd leave that one and put a nice 58 in the album.
Collector, occasional seller
I'd probably compromise and fill the album with circulated coins on the tough dates and lower MS grades for the commons. The challenge is to find attractive coins within those parameters. I don't necessarily agree with the premise that all coins in an album have to be closely matched on condition for an attractive overall presentation.
A fourth option is to keep the slabbed coins in their slabs and start a second set by finding nice circulated raw coins and fill the album with them.

That's what I'd do.
If you have no expectation that you will ever want or need to sell the coins then crack away; but as in the current economic situation; life can surprise you and if you find yourself in a position of needing to sell you will most likely see a significant reduction in value. I would do the virtual album or just do the album in VF - XF ish grades and forgo two sets. Why double the expense when those funds could be used to fund another series.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I got over albums for U.S. coins long ago. As for political tokens, not so much. You will lose a lot of money from the crack-outs and risk damaging the coins.
if you need to come here and solicit our advice on what to do I think you already know what not to do.
Make a digital album. You then have the ability to make it look like any holder(dansco, Littleton, etc.) and your coin will be able to be seen in whatever enlargement you wish, obv and rev, limited only by quality of photograph used. You also have the opportunity to add or omit coins, such as, varieties or super struck coins. It's your digital album, not dansco or Littleton or other.

This is why you have to do two sets !
Too much expense, can easily run $30 a coin to reslab.
Consider assembling a slabbed set and an album set that captures the series in a wider grade range.

The digital albums here at PCGS are terrific. You can view them from anywhere and with any device. No need to fill an album with circulated coins. Use that money for better mint state examples for your digital album.
Looking at pics of coins on a computer screen is just not the same as looking at real coins in hand where you can examine them up close under magnification and then rotate and tilt them under a light to see the luster dance across their surfaces.

Makes perfect sense to me.
It takes 2 minutes and is free to crack out a coin, multiple weeks and money to put it back in a slab. Unless you absolutely hate slabs, it’s a lot of pain and effort to have to redo the whole thing if you have cracking remorse.
Don't crack the slabs. But if you do, return the labels to keep the census accurate.
With Peace Dollars cracking non common dates only makes sense under MS63.
Thanks everybody. I may crack some of the less expensive coins but will not crack the better dates. A digital album will have to do. As far as cracking the 34-s I do not have to worry about that as I have not purchased one yet.
I am surprised that no one has suggested these yet. Kind of the best of both worlds actually. I know its not a Dansco or some other nice album, but can technically be an album.

Thanks. I actually have some of those stashed away.
