Dear Valued Customer,
Late today, in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, Orange County, California issued an emergency order declaring nonessential businesses that operate within the county to close, effective immediately, through March 31, 2020.
As such, Collectors Universe and its Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) divisions are temporarily ceasing operations.
Non-local business units, such as PCGS Hong Kong, PCGS Shanghai, PSA New Jersey and PSA Tokyo, will remain open. Certified Coin Exchange (CCE) and Long Beach Expo operations will also remain operational.
Customers are asked to not ship submissions to our California office until operations are reopened. If you have an inbound shipment to Collectors Universe, it will be received and securely stored at our facility.
The situation is fluid and we'll continue to keep our customers updated regarding the availability of our services.
We know this is a period of great uncertainty and we remain committed to providing world class services as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Joe Orlando

DANG! I've had a submission in holder + label check since last week.
Yeah - 3 submissions in grading here...oh well! It's just coins, not worth someone's illness or death.
WS
...any chance they open a grading room at the international space station?
I guess that means I can stop checking for the status of my submission.
Oh WTF! 5 in grading. Ugh.

Probably for the best. 10 or 12 wks will go by fast.
Nonessential?
That was my first thought. It’s rather subjective isn’t it?😉
Seriously though I wish the best for each and every member of the PCGS team and their families. I’m sure you folks will all come through this healthy and well.
In the future you should consider moving here to sunny Florida. Lower taxes and our government officials don’t start melting when the temperature reaches 33 degrees. 😛

And early today, I shipped out a submission. Sigh.

Wow. This is going to have a significant effect on upcoming consignments, auctions, dealer offerings, etc.
Not a surprise though.
Really bad timing.
Yeah, and I shipped it Express Mail, so they'll have it tomorrow.

Doesn't the man realize that we can't survive with our coins in limbo? I need my grades,,,,,,
Actually I don't have anything in submission right now but that is beside the point. I feel for you that do,,,,,
just pretend like turnaround times have gone back to 1990's wait times.
The whole world has gone nuts!!!!!
Is GreatCollections affected?
I just submitted this wee for cross over. Oh well, pcgs employee safety is much more important than my grade. I can wait. Hopes no one will get infected in pcgs. Take care.
It is going to be longer. Hunker down folks.
"It's like God, Family, Country, except Sticker, Plastic, Coin."
NGC is loving that.
I read a letter in the New England Journal of Medicine today stating "The virus lives longest on plastic and steel, surviving for up to 72 hours." I hope we all stay safe.

Will the forum sites be affected?

I just hope the Post Office stays open.
As much as I would like to see the results on the cross over submission currently at PCGS, I understand favoring the side of caution for their staff and will be willing to wait until conditions improve . . .
Highly unlikely, as they can be administered remotely.
Gee, I figured the moderators would be off, so the forums would be the “Wild, Wild West” for the next two weeks!

It is....
Dear Friends,
We added a press release earlier about how our company is dealing with the coronavirus emergency and since then, things have rapidly progressed in Irvine, California where our company is located.
This afternoon (March 17th), the Orange County authorities have closed all non-essential businesses in Orange County, effective immediately, until Tuesday, March 31st. To us, any business related to coins is essential, but they are not listed on the exclusions list.
Apart from the two auctions we're extending, we hope clients will not notice much difference otherwise, as we have made preparations over the past two weeks and anticipated the possibility of major cities closing around the U.S.
How GreatCollections will be affected by this measure:
Our March 22nd and March 29th auctions will be delayed by 14 days each - so all coins/paper money currently scheduled to end on Sunday, March 22nd, will be moved to Sunday, April 5th. And the coins we just listed for our Sunday, March 29th auctions will be moved to Sunday, April 12th.
Shipping
For invoices recently paid, we do plan on shipping these in the next two days and will e-mail tracking numbers, as usual. For invoices paid over the next few days, we will endeavor to ship these as usual as well.
Consignor checks/payments
All consignors for recent auctions will be paid in full as scheduled and will be completely unaffected by the Orange County shutdown.
Receiving consignments and mail
We have made arrangements that consignments shipped to us will still be received by our firm - and after a 48 hour hold period in a dedicated vault at GreatCollections, your consignment will be logged in to your account. Rest assured, you can still ship consignments to GreatCollections and they will be received safely and securely.
For clients who mailed us checks (or plan to mail checks), please continue to do so, and they will be processed on the day they are received.
Cash advances for consignors
For consignments that arrived today and will arrive over the next two weeks, we will be processing advances as usual, immediately after they are logged into your account. We can wire proceeds and also overnight checks by request.
CAC and coins at grading (PCGS, NGC & ANACS)
We will resume processing recently consigned raw coins for grading when we return on Wednesday, April 1st, as well as coins received back from the grading services between now and March 31st.
Customer service
We will still be returning calls and e-mails seven days a week during this period. Contact us if you need help with anything.
Our staff will continue to be paid in full during this shutdown - and we have your business over the past decade to thank for this. So, we repeat - thank you for everyone's support during these times. Stay safe and keep in touch.

Owners/Founders, GreatCollections
PS. We have been working on some of the biggest collections we've ever brought to market over the past few weeks - a complete $2.5 Indian Set in Mint State and Proof graded by PCGS - a significant collection of Classic Proof Gold and other Rarities - the finest NGC-graded 1953-S Franklin with Full Bell Lines and too many other coins to mention. Stay tuned for our April and May auctions!

Dang...well, not the end of the world. If just one virus contamination is stopped it is worth it.
Lance.
Thanks for the concern, it is appreciated.
As far as I know there are no graders on the space station, but if there are, I’d like to publicly volunteer if a photographer is needed for TrueViews

it will be a long and boring stretch,,,,,

That's gotta qualify for a special limited-time label, no?
Ha, that's where mine is too.

7 figure shipping? no big deal.

Probably not for long. They are based in Florida, a state with a high retiree population that will be highly vulnerable to the virus. Things continue to change by the hour.
Great call - good to hear.
Stay safe everyone, including our good friends at PCGS. We’ll get through this...brighter days are ahead.
Dave
Not surprised. I think all non-essential businesses in Orange Co. have been ordered to shut down.
My order just finished and shipped out today. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. We’ll see if the post office continues to operate. I’d rather have the coins secured at PCGS than somewhere in between.
Well I do hope that all those with Collector's Universe stay well during this outbreak.
When they do get back I have some coins I need to get graded. So I hope they know I will help in keeping their business thriving.

It’s the right choice period but my submissions reserve the right to be sad about it.
More than one post to this thread made it sound as if the temporary closing was PCGS’ choice. Based on the first sentence in the announcement, it didn’t sound like much of a choice to me:
“ Late today, in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, Orange County, California issued an emergency order declaring nonessential businesses that operate within the county to close, effective immediately, through March 31, 2020.”

An unavoidable, and prudent, situation. The situation demands drastic actions at this point. Yes, most young, healthy adults and children who contract the virus, will recover. However, people they come in contact with - the aged, infirm or immuno-compromised - may well die from this virus. The overwhelming majority of deaths are in those categories. Stay well people, and avoid crowds, groups whenever possible. Cheers, RickO
At least the coins are safe.
Stay well everyone......this too shall pass.
No shows, auctions, retail storefronts, etc for some time. Everything will synch back up in time. Online sales will continue until we start getting shelter-in-place orders that prevent the USPS and courier services from operating or at least buyers and sellers from transporting coins around.
Sorry no such luck! 😈

Well that's a real buzz kill.
My Collection of Old Holders
Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I’m sure but in worst case we’d likely be screwed. This is being treated as an act of god situation so any losses as a result could be considered as a direct result thereof and not insured. Just something to ponder. I’m not worried in the least, but......

Did anyone else get the message that just came through from across the street?
That didn’t take long.

It’s the right thing to do. We have closed our school but will still pay our employees out of pocket because we care.
Please stay safe out there.
Fred at PCGS has my coins right now, he might as well enjoy them while he has them
I don't expect to get them back anytime soon.
You guys are spoiled. When PCGS first started in 1986, the waiting time to get a submission back was several months.
