You guys are spoiled. When PCGS first started in 1986, the waiting time to get a submission back was several months. :o

    1986? Wasn't Jefferson President back then? B)

The other big just emailed out cutting membership fee by 50%. Sort of dirty pool given the situation

glad Heather is gone for a spell, I'd hate to have you banned with only 45 comments total.

or did you mean why the fuss?

    The letter gets someone banned.

More than one post to this thread made it sound as if the temporary closing was PCGS’ choice. Based on the first sentence in the announcement, it didn’t sound like much of a choice to me:
“ Late today, in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, Orange County, California issued an emergency order declaring nonessential businesses that operate within the county to close, effective immediately, through March 31, 2020.”

You beat me to the only reasonable response....It was not PCGS's idea to close. The way this panic is taking over, it is a sure thing that all business will eventually be shut down by state/local governments. The people we elect have to look like they are doing something - no matter the consequences. My only regret is I'm not still in school so I could get a month VACATION!

We have a large cross country membership here. Note that not one member has posted that they are sick. IMO, most of us will come down with symptoms whether we go to work, movies, In-&-out Burger, or stay home. I doubt any of us will die. Hope all of you have TP.

I thought just the opposite which was that anyone po’ed over the closing was pointing their ire at an over reactive local government. I think that wasn’t explicitly stated by some, including me, over the desire to abide by the no politics rule as closely as possible. Hence my thinly veiled description of California politicians as snowflakes.
As someone with significant county government managerial experience I absolutely can attest to above descriptions of politicians needing to be seen doing something-anything. That’s what politicians do as they will get paid no matter what, regardless of the hardships their constituents suffer.
I’m not seeing the PCGS hate. You’d have to be completely irrational to think PCGS wants to lose revenue. I cannot believe forum members could be that daft.

The OC is backing off, apparently.

LA news radio is reporting that they never intended to REQUIRE that businesses close. So, they are either backtracking now, or they have a really bad press release writer(?)

Don't know if this will change PCGS's mind on the matter....

Does anyone posting here know anyone with the virus? I'm asking everyone I talk with and so far "BIG FAT ZERO." I'll guarantee that a bunch of us would test positive and unless tested we'll never know we ever had it. Heck, last year, one coworker got a cold from his son and two of us at work got it from him. Nothing shut down, no masks, etc. Life as usual. Even today a bunch of us in the grading room are sneezing and it is in the 80's today.

BTW, it appears the office supply places have TP. A box of 96 rolls was delivered to the office today out of the blue.

California is doing the right thing, Thank God o:)

I expect we will end up closing the state down for at least one month.

California is always a precursor of the things to come that we all "need." I'd be more worried about the geology out there than a virus.

I'm going to bet that the folks at PCGS change their mind in a few days. They may open on a voluntary basis or reduced workforce to keep a flow of coins going out. Look, the PO, banks, hospitals, truckers, TV/radio stations, etc. are at work. Best of all, the freeway drive will become a breeze. Take your weekend ride to work.

Anyway, I've added a special prayer for all of our CA citizens to my daily prayer for our country & the world. I hope others here do the same. o:)

And, if they do, and someone there contracts covid-19, then....?

I say this because Costco decided, last week, to keep everyone AT work, when every other large company, and even smaller ones that could, sent everyone home that could work from home. Costco chose NOT to do that, but to keep everyone at work at their desks.

They backtracked on that this week after one of their office employees contracted covid-19 and died. They don't know, at the moment since this is fresh news, if covid-19 is what killed the employee, but they do know that the employee had it and died and that Costco had initially denied employees the ability/right to work from home.

I would rather PCGS err on the side of caution for their employees than to cave in to some online push to stay open...at the risk of their employees.....and, I say this as a stock shareholder

Yep. The 20yo daughter of a friend of mine was told 2 days ago that she has covid-19. She's young, her future step-father is a doctor, and she is healthy, so she should be fine (she goes to a local college as well, but all those are shut down around here). I am more worried about her grandmother, who her mother and brother live with and where she most likely will be (as she still lives there when school is out).

For those that have not already seen the latest update

    UPDATED MARCH 18, 2020
    Dear Valued Customer,

Orange County has clarified its emergency order and is now allowing businesses, including Collectors Universe, to resume operations.

As a result, Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) will resume operations, effective immediately.

As evident by the multiple policy changes, this situation remains extremely fluid. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this ordeal. Ultimately, we are committed to both the health and safety of our employees and the delivery of our services to our loyal customers.

    Sincerely,

    Brett Charville
    President, PCGS
