Have my eye on 4-5 lots in the upcoming Stacks sale - you??

There's a very wide range of material coming up, 4-5 lots of which I've put in "placeholder" bids so that I can get daily updates on them from SB.
While I'm not going to say which lots, they are pretty exciting (to me).
Here's hoping that the buyers and sellers both do reasonably well.

Don’t temp me. If I look I bid.
I was seriously looking at a couple. But with the stock market taking out a large part of my 401k I don't feel like spending big right now.

I'm watching 74 lots but have been outbid on the ones I have placeholder bids on. Here's an Erie Canal So-Called Dollar that has already gone way past my bid but still not hitting the reserve. Quick question. Did someone actually bid that amount, or does the bidding get auto-advanced to one increment before the reserve?
I've also been impacted by the market so that will affect my participation.
I have about 15 lots I'm watching, that will grow tonight, about six I'm bidding on and 2-3 I'm serious about. I told a few members what my "reach" lots are.
this is a good auction it's hard to presume where prices will go. if everyone is hunkered down in there homes it will tough sledding for a blue-collar retiree like myself.
or does the bidding get auto-advanced to one increment before the reserve?

I am watching a bunch. Watching them go higher than I am willing to pay. This happens to me a lot as I have higher tastes than my budget will allow!
I'm going to pass on the S-B auction for two reasons - 1) I don't see any must-have lots for me and 2) there are already several must-have lots I really want in Heritage's now-moved Central States auction. That sale could really be painful for the checkbook.

I am not looking at auctions at all.
Instead I am saving free cash to buy into the stock market. Hope I can time the bottom.

Bidding on two, watching several more...
The opportunity cost of buying coins is a bit too high for me right now, unless prices end up ~30% down.
Watching 74 lots?? Holy Cow!
Glad I have a narrow focus......
The toned Washington Quarters are nice. Well, a whole bunch of the offerings are nice.
Agreed. I think there's an opportunity to do really well in the stock market. Hopefully, some of that can go into a future coin budget.
You did say "There's a very wide range of material coming up"
The reality is that I'm mostly just watching. Bidding and winning is another story.
I'm looking at 8 lots. I haven't put a place holder on any of them yet, and I'm not sure if I will actively bid on them. I'm also trying to keep cash available to get into the market when the time is right. There's going to be some fantastic opportunities eventually.
I had high hopes for stuff in this auction but I’m going to sit this one out. The thought of writing a check right now for a coin just doesn’t resonate well with me. I have a lot of people who depend on me and I can’t control external forces including future pay/ compensation. Business has just ceased up completely.
For sure 5 years from now I might regret not having bid/ buying some of these coins/ medals but I’ll have to live with that.
Good luck to all that do bid and May the Force be with you

This is a sad post. Without knowing your financial situation...but suspecting I do. You do not strike me as the type to even remotely threaten your financial position. Perhaps you are being overly cautious?
I looked at a couple tokens and medals, but the stock market has me pulling in my horns.
I guess I'm onna the rare birds around here that is not directly dependent on the stock market. Will it effect my business...of course. I have always felt the stock market has been over valued since the early 90's. I still think it is today even at today's closing levels.
I have bid on one lot and am watching an additional three. I am looking forward to the auction. With the current situation in the world it should be interesting to see what happens.

For sure I’m being overly cautious. You are very astute and I appreciate that. It’s actually not like me at all to be overly cautious but I hate not being in control of my situation. It’s a flaw of mine.
I was actually supposed to visit Stacks offices tomorrow to view coins. But between self quarantine ( ends tomorrow )and the uncertainty of this crisis I canceled with Brian an hour ago.
I’ll be fine financially but here is the question. Sometimes I have to bid mid six figures on several lots and maybe I win a few of of them. In this auction I was planning on bidding even more. Lots of special coins. I even sold off part of my collection in December to add powder for Pogue/ Stacks. Let’s say I still bid on the lots as planned and let’s say I even reduce the max bid.....what if I “win” most or all of them? Normally I would be thrilled. I’m not sure how I wouldn’t feel this time. Hope that makes sense.
I do reserve the right to change my mind. I want to stay as liquid as possible. I’m not getting any younger. On the flip side I’m a certified yoga instructor and maybe we downsize and I open a studio and teach.

What can you do when CDs and investment grade bonds are paying almost nothing? I am more into the stock market than I want to be. These ridiculous interest rates have killed retirees for years.
Funny we're talking about this now. I retired last year and sold my half of the business to my partners. I just got off the phone with them, and they asked if I could forgo payments for the foreseeable future. Of course I agreed. They and the rest of the crew are family, and I'd do anything to help. The business is entirely dependent on large event productions - concerts, corporates, festivals, sporting events - anything with a big crowd. ALL business came to a screaming halt over the past four days.
I think I'll hold off on coin auctions for awhile.
Hmmm, sounds like the 1 you really want is at the end of the list of what you wanted to bid for. Time to stay up and bid live instead of blanket bidding on several you want!
It’s not the stock market I’m all that concerned about. It’s the job market.

When interset rates crashed I put my eggs in the coin basket! If all fails I have lots of hard money to spend on bread!
I definitely hear what you all are saying - but don't think this is the end of the world.
Looks like a buying opportunity if you have the funds ......... and hoping the lots I like are reasonable!
My dental offices just got closed for at least 3 weeks there will be no more coin purchases for a long time.
This, big time. Stock market will go up, or down, back up, back down. Unemployment numbers are going up for the next several months. Be prepared for family members that will need help, and don’t forget your neighbors.
That’s what I was getting at but you said It better.
Thank you

Tim, I hear you and you’re probably right
There is some great stuff in the SB auction and the last time I sat on my hands I was 12.

Watching 5 or 6... we’ll see.

I'll bid on some things, but it's hard without actually seeing the coins in hand.

A couple of serious bids plus a bunch that I shouldn't win - but you never know.
Missed the 1 lot I really wanted - probably a reasonable price but not for me. Garrett provenance ..... sold for $7800.
No, I wasn't the underbidder.
I did not bid on that lot but watched it out of curiosity. Overstrikes on silver quarters are exceedingly rare. As the description on this one mentioned it sold for $4400 back in 1981. It seemed to go for a reasonable price but for Civil War tokens as a group it is a really expensive one. I don’t remember exactly but I recall seeing a different quarter overstrike for sale for somewhere around 10-12K but can’t remember the details.

IIRC correctly, QDB had one for sale in a fixed price list struck over a 1854 A&R quarter in that price range. It wasn't nearly as attractive as this one.
Sorry you didn't get it. The Bode Birdstuffer overstrike is a knockout. The strike is really strong and the surfaces are nice. It's even hard to tell that the obverse is an overstrike. Overall, super attractive.
Here's the TrueView:
I ended up with:
Yesterday I cancelled a bunch of International travel we had coming up. I took a 15% loss, but got 85% of my money back. Some of my colleagues told me I was crazy to take the loss (I could have had 100% credit with the booking companies and airlines), but right now I'd rather take what I can get, with no assumptions that credit with companies in the travel sector will be worth much in the future. Normally having that much free cash would greatly tempt me in an auction like this, but that's all just going to sit there.
People with a pile of cash can make a killing in situations like this....... but that's a small minority of the population. Most people are leveraged pretty badly when things are good. I'm guessing it's going to be a buyer's market in coins (and virtually everything else that isn't essential) for a while.
So, that said, I'm looking somewhat seriously at a single lot.
I have that common CWT in copper, and that’s good enough for me. I have never been a fan of off-metal CWTs. They were “made to sell “ items to collectors back in the day. I am far more interested in “made to spend” items back in the day.

m,
I totally agree. A side note..........
I came back from Las Vegas a few weeks ago with an accepted offer for a home me and my husband were going to retire in. We were very happy with the home and being on the fairway. Soon after it became apparent we are headed into an unprecedented volatile job and housing market.
Up until today I was trying to follow through as I knew the seller was financially in trouble.
.
Yesterday almost all Southbay beach new home developers decided to jump ship. We’re talking
a ton of out of work sub contractors. I decided this morning to cancel the home purchase and moved several subs to my contract I have going with a large remodel. At least several guys I know will now
get some money. I’m not rich but the few I can help is worth it

That is a really cool coin/token I think you will regret not buying later(especially from the comments). That's 1 I have never seen but I'm not a token buff.
Hi S!
Tracy and I ( she says hi) were looking at a house in Palm Springs a few weeks ago that we wanted to retire into eventually. We are pausing as well
FYI if you know of a good architect/ contractor let me know. We have a small remodel
Thanks and stay safe!

By the way, I was interested in the same lot as you, but I stayed out of the fight. I was happy to see the Birdstuffer go past my comfort zone, because this is just not the time
