RE COVID...Be Safe Everyone

RichRRichR Posts: 3,985 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just wanted to say that...

This is a great hobby and will provide some needed distraction over the next few (hopefully only weeks)...but things are getting scary out there now.

So be safe.

It's the flu. Even those who recovered from it have come forward to say relax.

Don't quite get the suicide comment above unless the reference is to the Russian Roulette aspect of attending events.

Re the flu-like aspects...as of yesterday there are some very un-flulike reports of significant lung scarring...even for those who recover and the young. So we might yet know enough about the later ramifications here...so keep those gloves on!

"Just the flu..." that only kills 50,000 annually...which will happen again this year...however, this is ANOTHER 50,000 on top of that 50,000...or 100,000...and if it's your friend or relative...well...very very bad.

And I'm hearing the number might be more like 500,000...if things go all wrong.

Meanwhile, I think...and I didn't look it up...but we lost 450,000 in WWII (and 54,000 in Vietnam)...all theatres...so this can be bad...especially for smokers, asthmatics, diabetics, etc.

    368 died today in Italy.

Actually the toilet paper and hoarding in general does have a psychological basis...I heard a therapist explaining it today...when people feel that events are spinning out of their control...they do things that seem to be logical and within their control...so instead of "doing nothing and feeling helpless"...you buy gas, food, tools, guns, and toilet paper...because it gives you a purpose.

That seemed to make sense to me.

And then there are the people who don't keep any food in their house in general (like most single men under the age of 30!)...they really do need food now!

I believe that's for initial or beginning stage symptoms.

Not to argue anything as anything is possible. The site you showed was based on other corona viruses and nothing mentioned about Covid-19. This does show the possibility but nothing severe enough to warrant toilet paper frenzy. Lol

Does that include coins too? I heard there has been a rush on silver coins, so much so that the mint has run out of silver. Is that true? Toilet paper and silver? Ai-yai-yai!

I have been telling family members and friends about this very issue. Carry wipes or at least a roll of paper towels in your vehicle for the purpose of handling gas pump handles. Don't touch them (or keypads on pumps) with your bare hands. Pay using a credit card or bank debit card, to avoid handling coins/currency until the coast is clear.

It's been more than 40 years since I have seen this kind of panic buying. Back then (before 1980), I was living in the suburbs of Miami. Panic buying was pretty routine whenever a hurricane was predicted to hit southern Florida.

The panic is ludicrous....The whole TP thing started with Australia.... because all TP in Australia is imported from China....and when China shut down, people anticipated a shortage - thus the rush....and then, for no logical reason, like lemmings, people all over the world started buying TP.....Amazing. Cheers, RickO

Without taking a political stance it’s also worth remembering that news organizations are for profit. Many like the click bait of negative articles or fear because it always draws people. Many have been criticized for capitalizing on such things and sensationalizing them.

One local station here took an unusual stance and said they would only deal with facts, not fear. They asked the public to call them out if they get click baity and such. And they’ve lived up to their word. It’s been good reporting without sensationalism.

Ars Technica has the best summary of facts, IMO. They update it daily: https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/03/dont-panic-the-comprehensive-ars-technica-guide-to-the-coronavirus/?amp=1
