Not worth the cost (in dollars) to go across county for a show, lots of money would be spent on travel, lodging, and food that will instead be spent on a new coin for my collection instead. Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
The odds seem to be mounting against all shows in the near future. Harvard and MIT just sent all of their undergraduates home for the year. The state basically issued guidance that it is not about the immediate risk, but instead about proactively eliminating areas of high population density to reduce the possibility of exposing large numbers. The governor said that of 94 cases of coronavirus in Massachusetts, 70 were traced back to a single biotech conference held at the Marriott Long Wharf in Boston. I suspect many other states will proactively cancel large gatherings.

There current numbers are Total cases: 938 -- and they dont count the us citizens abroad, or on cruise ships in that number.
Im appalled by all of the misinformation, everywhere.
I was supposed to go to a big medical conference in Orlando in 2 weeks with somewhere between 27,000 and 40,000 total people. They cancelled it yesterday. Multiply this by X number of other cancelled things and it's a HUGE hit to the travel, hotel, and food service industries. A large number of physicians who were scheduled to attend are employed by hospital systems that have started to ban travel for conferences. I was part of this group even before the meeting was officially cancelled.
I'm not all that afraid of the virus itself, but I don't really want to carry it back here and spread it around people who are susceptible. Containment efforts do seem to be working (new cases in Italy are dropping - finally) and conferences / meetings have been shown to be a bit risky. This might be especially dangerous for the cohort of people that make up the coin scene.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a national restriction on large events soon.
I'd still like to remind people that outside of limited areas (like parts of Italy), regular Influenza and other common diseases are still a much bigger problem than COVID-19. Keep your head on straight.

When I look around Whitman in shows past, the majority of the people are overweight and old men. This demographic is basically the target demographic of serious cases of coronavirus. It could be devastating.
To assess this , you have to look at the upside and downside. On the downside , what would the posts read like if by chance dozens of dealers and collectors were infected at this show and several died? The upside is nothing happens . At what point do you say that’s too steep a risk ? Watching congressional testimony today , it appears professional and collegiate sports and umpteen states and cities have decided it’s not worth the gamble .
Considering this flourishes in older people and in the cold , a Baltimore coin show in March sounds ripe for this virus.

WOW . This is really serious .
Maybe. Only the lens of history will really tell us. It’s probably right to be prudent, but there are signs this isn’t going to grow at a sustained exponential rate.
Certainly any issue is now viewed from an economic and political viewpoint and this will be no different. In the end. I’m guessing our response to the virus will do more actual damage than the infection, but it’s really hard to know. If we’re very lucky, warm weather will cause it to fizzle out.
One thing is for sure. We love to be fearful and the news excels..... absolutely excels at fear-mongering. Even so, we eventually adapt and deal with it and fear turns to understanding. Something else will eventually draw our attention and life will go on (for most).

On the flip side limiting exposure may slow this down. Then the precautions may be justified. We know you can’t stop it in it’s tracks. Slowing it down may be the only recourse

Since I babysit my 3-year old grandson, and my pregnant daughter-in-law drops him off, I'm more worried about bringing back the virus and passing it on to them, or my hubby. Also, I don't want to get stuck in some quarantine if someone on one of my flights or at the show gets sick. Further, the governor of Maryland declared a state of emergency and advised all state employees not to travel out of state and avoid attending any large gatherings. Too much downside to traveling right now.
For all these reasons, I made the tough decision a few days ago to cancel my trip to Baltimore.

That's one of the consolations, that young children don't by and large seem to be killed or seriously hurt by this virus. Despite that, often schools cancel their classes - probably because viruses and other things spread around school very quickly to other kids, and then the kids all bring that virus home to their parents (and maybe grandparents and other older relatives) who ARE more susceptible to harm.
I was reading a Harvard School of Medicine web page on whether this virus is like others and abates in warmer weather. They point out that sometimes the spread of these viruses slows down in the summer partly because kids are out of school and can't transmit it to each other so quickly.
I'm thinking the biggest problem with the spread of this virus might be because of children. I'm not being accusatory or anything, but they could become the silent carriers.

Congrats on your last score sir

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
The schools are closing in the Boston area but the Spring Flower Show at the Boston World trade center is continuing to attract large crowds. The geezers shuffling out of that venue look a lot like your coin show attendees. Commerce trumps common sense or ignorance is bliss...you choose.
Ill paraphrase: “you’re right, so I’ll commence the personal attacks.”
Also you called me fake news but literally nothing you’ve said is true. Corona is characterized by a low grade fever and mild respiratory issues in almost all cases.
I won’t say anything more because my intent isn’t to make you upset. Stay safe.
BHNC #248 … 130 and counting.
I'm beginning to think this show might be cancelled. I'll go with the flow. All travel banned to Europe says it all.
Utah Jazz player diagnosed with it.
NBA suspended the season.
Most travel from Europe banned for 30 days.
Pretty sure we hear the show is off tomorrow.

It’s the opposite. No travel from Europe to the US. Inexplicably travel from the UK to the US is ok. Covid-19 is ramping up in the UK

Yes that NBA was a non believer of the implications of Covid-19. So after a news conference he made a point to touch the microphones, recorders everything he could touch. A couple of days later he is diagnosed with Covid-19 and the season is suspended.
Folks don’t be stupid. This is real. The only thing we don’t know is just how bad it’s going to play out.

I'm going as long as PCGS will be there as I mainly go for sightseeing and submissions anyway.
Well, just Love coins, period.

I don't plan to change my plans to attend Wilmington NC or Dalton shows next month.
It would be a letdown if they were cancelled.
Got enough coins and cards to list on ebay to keep me busy for months.
Plenty of coins and cards to grade as well...

I think that is the smart move. I have seen that while children can get infected, they don't get very sick, so take some comfort in that!

A yearly National Beatle Fest in New Jersey scheduled for late March has now been canceled. It's located across the Hudson from NYC. I've been to it once. It is heavily attended. Just one more event cancelled.
A very wise and considerate move on your part.
Well, My Mom lives with me so that really has me thinking!
I'm starting to hope they cancel the show. Woo Hoo, for a rare time my Hotel reservation can be cancelled up to the day before!
I'm thinking the biggest problem with the spread of this virus might be because of children. I'm not being accusatory or anything, but they could become the silent carriers.
