    I just got my 1970-D Peace dollar with the Apollo reverse, and I have to ask the obvious/stupid question. Where is the mint mark? It's not on the reverse (as it wasn't, for the Apollo) and it's not on the obverse (where it would be, comparable to the Ike).

    Not unprecedented... the U.S. Mint in Denver produced "no D" cents in 1922: http://lincolncentresource.com/1922Ddievarieties.html

    Coincidentally, the Die Pair 2 cent is the most interesting (and desirable).

    Mine arrived and they all look great. I got my camera out and got pics of 2 medals and the battery went dead. So give me a couple of hours and I'll put up some stuff that hasn't been seen yet.

    I'm not just saying this but the quality is the best I've ever seen from Dan. The HG O/S Dollars all look to be 70 and the Circulated pieces were at least XF45 with no marks. Chain Cents, no problems. I'll get some photos asap.

    True, but the "no-D" cents were a result of over-zealous die polishing (as I recall).

    IMHO
    In the Moonlight Mint case, it the 1970-D die pair 1 set included a D Peace reverse (obviously). However, die pair 2 set (Peace/Ike) would NOT have a mintmark in the usual places since Peace's only had mm's on the reverse and Ike's only on the obverse. Dan would have had to position a mm in a "new" location -- which apparently did not happen. Even if the host coin used WAS a D mm, it would have been obliterated during the overstrike (ghost??).

    My guess is it was a simple oversight by Dan as die 2 was based on the obv of die 1. Note that there was no mention of a D mm in his production blog re the 1970 dollars being from Denver...question is...where were the test strikes originally made? If Philly, then the restrike is authentic and the date/mm title simply needs to be corrected. If Denver, well - that's somewhat of a OOPS!

    The same "1970" Peace obverse die is used for all three versions. That die does not have a "D".
    The Peace reverse die used for the 90% silver overstrikes (on Peace Dollars) has a "D" in the usual mint mark location.
    But there is no "D" on the Eisenhower (Apollo 11) reverse die.
    So it was a mistake to refer to the Eisenhower Dollar over-strikes as "1970-D".

    PS:
    The reverse die used for the "1970-D" over-strikes on Peace Dollars is the same reverse die that was used for the Die Pair 8 "1964-D" Peace Dollar over-strikes. All "1970" over-strikes share the same obverse die and that die has some die engraving doubling on the tiara rays and "BERTY".

    Thank you for the explanation. To be clear, I wasn't asking as a form of complaint. It seems obvious now that's what happened, and the lack of a "D" doesn't really matter. It's still a gorgeous piece.
