Whew! Seated Dime Variety Set is finally complete.

I started my seated dime set in the 1980's as a teenager. After taking a break from coins for about 25 years, I started working on it again in 2014. I finished the basic date and mintmark set a few years ago. About the same time I decided to take the set to the next level by adding the coins necessary for the Complete Variety Set. This Complete Variety Set includes all of date/mintmark set, the major Redbook varieties, and the minor varieties listed in the Cherry Picker's Guide.
The set really got a kick when DIMEMAN sold his set through Rick Snow in 2017 and I picked up ten or so of those coins. Many other dealers provided coins, including Gerry Fortin, Brian Cushing, and Rich Uhrich.
This is the first 100% complete set listed on the PCGS Registry, which is pretty cool. I suspect that DIMEMAN may have had all of these varieties at some point. Given the extreme rarity of some of these varieties, I'm kinda proud that there is only one Details coin in the set: the 1876-S RPD FS-501, which has no straight graded examples in the PCGS population. All but a handful of coins are VF-AU, consistent with my goals when I started collecting seated dimes many years ago.

@savitale - You are correct. At one time I have had all of those coins. The 1876-S 501 (actually 301) details is from my set. Glad you got it and a BIG congrats on your completed set!!! I think your 1841-O sm o 901 was my coin also. It's great to see my old coins in such a GREAT Set!!

The next project ... well I really should get back to paying the mortgage.
But beyond that I have a type set to finish up. It's in an album. I really like albums, at heart I would prefer if coins weren't in slabs.

I don't have a favorite, but in a way one of the coins you pointed out was kind of a pivotal moment. I was down to the last 10 or so coins of the Basic Set, including the four CC's (1871-1874). I had decided that those four coins were out of reach for me financially and I would be content with finishing the Basic Set set without them, and then I would move on to some other series, or hobby. I went to winter FUN 2017 (my first major coin show in almost 30 years) hoping to find one of the other few coins. I walked the whole floor and totally struck out, zilch, nada on the bourse. I was very disappointed; the trip to FUN was a non-trivial endeavor for me.
With nothing else to do before my flight home I walked up and down the same aisles for the third time, just browsing to pass the time. About 30 minutes before the end of the show I looked at a case I had only glanced at before because it seemed to be really high end stuff that didn't fit the profile of a circulated seated dime collector. An 1871-CC was in the case, a perfect match for my set, but with a price tag nearly 9x what I had ever paid for a coin before. I walked away.
Then I walked back. "If I'm a Seated Dime collector I should ask to see it at least," I thought, since I'm normally embarrassed to ask to view coins I don't intend to buy. I don't know if it was the angel on my right shoulder or the devil on my left shoulder, but as I held the coin someone whispered very clearly in my ear "It's time to go big or go home." I bought the coin. To this day I'm surprised he took my check. The dealer was Harry Laibstain.

Mistakes are natural. But repeated mistakes without reflection are something else. That may be the “stupidity” he was referring to. In research, he admitted uncertainty openly. “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” This shows humility. Even a Nobel laureate accepted doubt. That humility makes the quote less cynical and more observational.
