I voted #3 (haven't added...in years), but this is technically not true.

I consider myself to be a mostly dormant collector. I have sold off most of my coins (of value), but still have a modest size/value collection. Over the last couple of years, I have purchased a coin or two and came close to buying others.

Still actively collecting, again. Rebuilding my collection after selling it off a few years ago to move across the country and buy a new house. Also selling duplicates/upgrades on eBay, but I buy more than I sell.

Still actively collecting. Over the last 30+ years between baseball cards and coins, I've never stopped collecting. I started with coins, then went exclusively to baseball cards and now back to coins (PCGS) and baseball cards (PSA).

Staying put. I may buy the right coin. Not selling either.

    Ditto for me

I've been in a slump as far as buying individual or actively building sets for quite a while now. The past couple years has mostly been bullion stacking with a little flipping and only a couple new "keepers".

I have slowed way down but not to a crawl. Still relatively active.

Edit to add: I do most of my buying at shows, unless I see something truly remarkable online, which happens from time to time.

I am trying to be focused. I sold one collection, actively building another, trying to figure which others to sell or keep going with.

Actively collecting...I've already bought more coins in 2020 than in all of 2019.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • yspsalesyspsales Posts: 2,526 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have never been much of a collector.

Coins have always been a cherrypick/treasure hunt for me, and once owned they lose the luster for profits.

Grading, cherrypicking, with an eye towards developing more of a vest pocket, specialized niche dealer mentality is my current status.

I have slowed down, but it’s not “a crawl.” I might get the 12th of the 12 caesars next week. (it’s ordered, but it’s never done until it’s in my hand.) I am also working the British kings, now back to Alfred the Great.

As for regular U.S., I have scaled way back because of grading and market issues.

Abandoning US is a smart idea. The grading and market issues are going to keep interest on the decline.

Collecting has slowed down to a crawl BUT it's because I'm down to just the hardest varieties.

Still actively collecting (including too many impulse purchases) but I also have a written, specific bucket list.

Slowed to a crawl, but added both gold and silver 'bullion' type coins prior to the recent run up, and trying to divest many of my ancillary numismatic-related holdings. Also trying to take the time to appreciate a lot of the stuff I have!

Completing my Roosevelt registry set last year re-energized me, and I've been actively pursuing upgrades for it. I've also branched out into Large Type US currency and, to a lesser extent, Swiss shooting medals. I still occasionally pick up a US type coin that calls my name, but it's no longer a priority.

I'm still adding a few coins on a fairly steady basis. It will be up to my heirs to liquidate, per written instructions from me.

I'm deep into the " shoulda, coulda, wouda" phase. By the time I get motivated to dump my State Quarters, no one will be using any of it. I'll likely need to call 1-888-Got Junk to remove the stuff.

At my age, I am trying not to accumulate many more collectible coins. Trying to be more of a stacker of 90% silver and bullion in general. Something that my heirs can just liquidate with less hassle than selling collectible coins.

  • Dave99BDave99B Posts: 8,700 ✭✭✭✭✭

Sort of a crawl for me. I’ve sold some things, and I’m generating cash for the purpose of upgrading some of my core sets...just can’t locate any true upgrades. Frustrating, but the search continues.

I took an almost two-year hiatus from numismatics, and only came back to the fold last month. I bought a couple of modestly priced coins, but am still mulling over the future. Maybe I'll shift gears again (I have done this several times before) or just focus on numismatic literature and move into the barn with my wife's horses. :'(

at the stage where my collection is awesome, but if something comes along that would make it even more awesome, I will try to buy it. However, if someone plunks a stupid amount of cash in front of me for the whole thing, it's gone.

Active buying and selling but concerned about future outlook of US market. A collector at heart but at the end of the day sales / cost of sales / gross margin for month on my mind.

I mainly want to reduce quantity of slabs for control purposes but maintain about same overall investment. Have cut fixed costs to a more lean structure. Current market conditions force tight margins.

One inexpensive enjoyable project has been buying slabbed PCGS 65 and above W Quarters. Interest remains in Classic Commems and Mexico 2nd Republic. Also looking increase graded banknotes. Have considered getting rid of most US coins except for material in $50 to $300 range - for Increase in graded banknote inventory and quality low pop world slabbed coins. The coin pictured has a pop of 2, none higher.

I'm actively building although it's getting challenging because of supply and competition. Happily, I've already managed to acquire more than I ever thought I would so if I'm forced to take a year or two off, I'd be fine with that.

I come and go in waves, but I’ve been collecting nonstop since I was about eight. I have been buying a silver Kennedy proof half dollar every year just because it can be expensive to get those later.

I’m currently definitely back though, and it really helps to have finally broken down and gotten a pair of reading glasses.. At 48, my eyes weren’t quite what they used to be!

Being that I only need one coin left to complete my Walker set; I have been very discriminating and diligent in searching for that last piece. It is just a waiting game, now. In the meantime; I enjoy dabbling in other series, such as Standing Liberties and Morgans, but I am in NO WAY purchasing, as aggressively as I did, when I started my Walker set back in 2005. Everything now is just gravy.....
