1990 D Lincoln Cent Silver

1990 D Lincoln Cent that is silver in color. It weighs 2.65 grams. The color is a bright shiny luster. Does not appear to be heated or chemically treated. It looks like it’s unplated.

What are your thoughts?

I checked to see if it’s magnetic and it is not. It weighs more than it should. It should weigh 2.50 grams but it weighs 2.65 grams.

It is plated so no extra value.

The copper coating must have bean warn off or eaten away by a chemical solution. What you see is what is left, The zinc of the penny

Adding silver plating would increase the weight.

If it is plated it should weigh more than a standard cent.

Also, I see plating bubbles on the obverse. Either from the original copper plating or the subsequent unofficial plating.

I have one too. (1990 d). I received it as change in the J.P.L. cafeteria back in the 90s. I just assumed that one of the Cal Tec students was having a little fun and I was out 10c. Threw it in the coin collection. It looks basically uncirculated.

@Grantlee.... Welcome aboard. No, cents have been plated with silver, mercury or gold by people for various reasons... jewelry, curiosity, scams.... No added numismatic value. Cheers, RickO

Obviously plated, hence the added weight. Possibly mercury, which is toxic to handle. Beware!

A plain 1990 D cent is zinc plated with copper.

That silver color is from someone plating over the copper. Another more dangerous possibility is the cent has a coating of mercury on it.
