I cannot locate the picture for some reason, however, I did find a '43 WLH in a roll....not recently, I have not roll searched in quite a while... I should get back to it, can be fun when a silver half pops out... Cheers, RickO

It did easily, I will have to get actual measurements, if I can find it, because you are not the first to ask that question.
It was in a machine wrapped roll from the bank.

I like your coin roll finds but I am also interested in your large magnifying glass, I've been looking for something like that

It certainly helps. It was either Walmart or CVS. Next, I will be looking for one that is self-standing I don't have to hold. That should speed things up a bit.

A roll hunt from a local grocery store earlier this year. Close but no banana, I sold one 66 and kept the other.

Nice, got me beat by 10 or 12 years, I found a 1903 or 05 V while on the nickels.

Whats going on here? At least a couple of things one being not a close AM.

Was going to say strikethrough and possible die polishing, but... hmmm...

    Edit.

    Maybe.

A strikethrough should go over any reliefs. Those line appear to be under. So maybe a gouge on the die and an attempt was made to polish it out.

Might want to post as a separate thread with a catchy title for a wider exposure.

  • CoinscratchCoinscratch Posts: 7,807 ✭✭✭✭✭

@Hemispherical . That sounds good enough for me - Kinda what I suspected. Because of the polish marks from a distance it looked like a Close AM and caught my attention. And then just had to post to make sure it wasn't something rare :D

  • CoinscratchCoinscratch Posts: 7,807 ✭✭✭✭✭

I found these while roll hunting the other day. The bottom 12 have reflective surfaces, especially on the reverses. The top 4 are just regular looking and are for perspective only. I will assume these are the attributes for PL. Do you think any of these would qualify? And why or why not? Thanks!

More perspective, Regular in the middle.

Found a handful of 1998 and at least one 1999 Wide AM's back in the day.

Never had any luck with the '92 (and wasn't there a '96?)

The '99 sold for like $70 raw, and I was giddy at the time. The '98 didn't seem as scarce.

Now looking at their slabbed prices makes me feel no so giddy... lol

I am back on the bandwagon in a way. Sticking to proof sets and mint released rolls ATM

I will take a close up later when back home but, it looks like the standard FG for a wide AM. Picture is just blurry maybe.

  • CoinscratchCoinscratch Posts: 7,807 ✭✭✭✭✭

@yspsales . I think I read somewhere that the 98's are more scarce. I have turned over thousands upon thousands of them and never found one. I have found plenty of the 69 no FG's and wasn't even aware of the 96. I mainly search customer wrapped rolls from small town banks when possible. They usually have higher quality coins that haven't been through as many hands as the fed rolls.

  • CoinscratchCoinscratch Posts: 7,807 ✭✭✭✭✭

@Hemispherical . Well there you go - both sides eh. I wonder if an acetone bath might help clear the cloudiness and bring out mirrors on the obverse of 1 or 2 of them?

@ricko . Good luck on the silver expedition! Post here once you find it, you happy poster you :D

Not what I expected, last roll included a 2017-D and two 2018-D's

Went through 50 rolls of halves yesterday. I was looking for silver, proof coins, or 1987.

I'll be returning 1000 halves to the bank soon.

It's been many years so I may have my dates mixed.

It stands to reason... if they did it in '92, '98, '99, and I think '00 (as well as Close AM proof sets) they did it in the other dates as well.

Probably attrition plus not enough people seriously looking for them...

Only issue I had was disposing of the pennies and not causing problems with the bank.

I have started looking closer at quarters. Easier to spend... haha

@yspsales . I was taking them to coinstars but that takes too long and is expensive (11.9%). I recently joined a credit union and they have a much faster machine that is free. I switch gears once in a while and hunt quarters and nickels too.

  • CoinscratchCoinscratch Posts: 7,807 ✭✭✭✭✭

@carabonnair . Maybe someone was looking for a high grade. Last year I bought a bag of new halves from the mint and now i don't even remember why :D

    Whats up with 1987?

Kennedy halves were distributed only in mint sets that year - although not particularly rare, I have never found one in a roll.
[Edited to clarify - half dollars]

The 15-d is a major score.

Yea, that one really surprised me, along with the '72 which might be getting graded soon.

I might send that one off as well. It wouldn't have to grade very high to cover the expense.

Nice finds but again, going through 5,000 fed wrapped rolled cents to find one or two worthy of a slab...
Will be on the hunt again today for the infamous customer wrapped rolls. Once your in those, you can tell quickly if they have already been searched buy the existence or non-existence of Wheaties and high grades.

Some of my best roll finds come from unsuspecting little corner stores.

My truck was designed with roll hunting in mind :D

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

Wow...Is that a haul from the stores you reference? I would say people bring them in when a coinstar is not around...plus, the proprietor probably rolls a lot of the cents received - and likely does not check them. Good luck...Cheers, RickO

Yea, about 7 or 8 of them today. I work them into my route. I can't stop too many times or I'll never get any work done.
Each store is usually good for a few rolls on average.
The stores way off the beaten path tend to have the home rolled versions while the busier stores have the fed/armor type.
But, you just never know unless you ask...
