*** Answered *** GTG - 1853 Large Cent

This was a fun pickup from the Vegas PCGS Invitational this week. I'll post the answer tonight. It's in a newer PCGS gold shield slab. Extra credit for CAC vs no CAC. If you know the answer, don't spoil it.
Here it is. A couple of people got it right. i was wondering if anyone would be tempted by a RB designation. I think it's graded correctly, but I like having a bit of original red still there on a 167 year-old coin.

64RB
64+ RB
Very nice is my grade.
65 BN CAC
65 BN CAC here as well
I’ll say 64+BN with beanie.
65 BN CAC
I agree with Electricity!
I knew it would happen.
65
66BN
Edited to add: I don’t think there’s enough RB on the reverse to make up for so little of it on the obverse. I see very few noticeable flaws on a coin with adequate or better strike and luster and a nice overall appearance. So while it might not grade as high as my guess, a grade below MS65 would surprise me.

I’m torn between 64 and 65 CAC. Leaning toward 65. BN.
I grade it beautiful. Very nice.
64 BN no CAC
I would guess 64+ BN CAC
65 BN CAC.
Nice coin.
65 BN CAC
65 BN CAC, like most others have guessed.
64 BN CAC or 65 no CAC.
Not enough RD on coin for RB designation. Need to see it in hand. Can see a 65 if it has even, glistening chocolate luster on the obverse. If not, 64. See a sticker on it in any event.
"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
65 BN. If pics hiding big luster, then 66. Yes to CAC.
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
I'm definitely not a "copper guy", but I'll guess 65RB CAC.
65 BN CAC yes
66BN
Very beautiful coin
65 BN CAC
Answer in first post.
looks 65 BN to me and likely CAC. If it got the nod to 66 BN I would consider it overgraded.

I thought I would be odd-man-out and GUESS MS-66 RB but you and Mark beat me to it. However, my personal grade is MS-65+ Brown & Red with a CAC sticker.
We didn’t beat you to it, as we opined BN, not RB or “BR”.😉

I was right on the fence between RB and BN. Swap the obverse with the reverse, and it might go RB, I'd guess. Whatever the grade, it's a very attractive coin. Congrats on adding it to your collection.
When I saw this coin, the luster is what made me pull the trigger. That's one thing that's pretty hard to show in a photo. Well, in my photos anyhow. It's much easier to get a general idea (but never a full appreciation) for luster on silver and gold.
Very nice luster below that smooth chocolate
She is a beauty. I'd be proud to own that one!!!

IMO (not humble this time) calling a coin "brown" with all that "red" showing is plain silly. I've written before that the way color is treated on copper coins has evolved into a confusing mess of percentages by the younger numismatic professionals who run the commercial grading system.
It was easy in the old days before TPGS's became involved. If a brown coin had traces of red left in the protected areas it was RB. While BROWN does not conjure up an image of this coin AT ALL, BROWN & RED does. Hopefully, in the future, collectors/dealers/auction companies will force the other three TPGS's to adopt this new "designation" being used for coins like this one. It is just common sense.
So, BN, BR, RB, and RD?
I can live with that, and pray that decimal grading does not come later to color designations on coppers (in the interest of extracting the last drops of blood from buyers).
P.S. I happen to think that green coppers ('greenies') are much cooler than BN ones. So please add GN to color designations.

I have no problem with the current RD, RB and BN designations. Sellers are of course, free to describe the coins more fully such as, for example “Fully brown on the obverse, with approximately a third of the reverse displaying faded red-brown color, primarily at the peripheries.”
The problem with any color designation other than “BN” is that it’s accuracy can change over time, if or when the color mellows further.

I am late to the game.... already revealed. That is one beautiful large cent.... Great grade, and well deserved. I agree with the BN, but interesting to see some red remaining on the reverse. Thanks for showing it in all its regal glory. Cheers, RickO
Excellent coin!
