The coin is shot based on all of the corrosion. No harm in trying to determine the date unless you like the look of the coin in the concretion (which I think is kind of cool, the more I look at it) .
Keep as is. One of a kind.
It is probably worth more just as is. A curiosity item.

As much as I love Indian Head Cents (it's the series that hooked me into collecting) I'd keep it as is! as others have stated, if you clean it up to find out the date, you're just left with another corroded IHC... even if it's a '77 or an '09-S it's still corroded, environmental damage...
You have something special as is... not just another corroded IHC.

When the toning is 3D it is another kind of special. Especially if you discovered the coin with a metal detector.
Only downside is that PCGS will not (cannot) slab it as a special coin. But to just preserve it as found is way more special than a numerical grade , or date.

In revisiting this thread and looking at the reverse... sort of tough to tell, but it doesn't appear to have the shallow N reverse... leading me to believe it's probably not an 1877...

It would be nice to keep it as is, however, I am not sure that the deterioration can be completely halted...I would neutralize it with several baths of distilled water, dry it very well (mild, warm forced air), and then keep it in a sealed, plastic container for viewing. Cheers, RickO
