I would. I'd bet the date is well protected. The suspense is killing me. The denticles look pretty nice. Let us know. Peace Roy

The coin is shot based on all of the corrosion. No harm in trying to determine the date unless you like the look of the coin in the concretion (which I think is kind of cool, the more I look at it) .

Keep as is. One of a kind.

It is probably worth more just as is. A curiosity item.

No!!! I never seen anything like that.

You have a unique find as is - one that can't be re-created. If you crack it out you will just have a cull Indian Head cent.

I also think it's pretty cool as is!

I'm very curious to figure out the date but it is kinda cool the way it is, a conundrum.

Personally, I'd find out how to properly desalinate it to stop further damage and keep it just like that!

Of course there would have to be a cool way to display it as well.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

it would be pretty cool in a block of lucite.

it is worth more the way it is than after any sort of conservation

As much as I love Indian Head Cents (it's the series that hooked me into collecting) I'd keep it as is! as others have stated, if you clean it up to find out the date, you're just left with another corroded IHC... even if it's a '77 or an '09-S it's still corroded, environmental damage...

You have something special as is... not just another corroded IHC.

When the toning is 3D it is another kind of special. Especially if you discovered the coin with a metal detector.

Only downside is that PCGS will not (cannot) slab it as a special coin. But to just preserve it as found is way more special than a numerical grade , or date.

Wow! Nice and Congrats." Decisions, decisions!" Best thing, it is ALL up to you. My opinion, the poster that suggested to Lucite it, is the best one. What a conversation piece? A story that can be told to generations and generations. Always the notion it can be a key coin? Imagination is a great thing. Good Luck in whatever you decide, dude! B)B)B)

In revisiting this thread and looking at the reverse... sort of tough to tell, but it doesn't appear to have the shallow N reverse... leading me to believe it's probably not an 1877...

It would be nice to keep it as is, however, I am not sure that the deterioration can be completely halted...I would neutralize it with several baths of distilled water, dry it very well (mild, warm forced air), and then keep it in a sealed, plastic container for viewing. Cheers, RickO

That is neat the way it is. The problem is how to store/display it without the damaging 3-dimensionality of it.
