Best magazine for US coin collectors (primarily)

TurtleCatTurtleCat Posts: 4,628 ✭✭✭✭✭

I’ve been thinking about re-subscribing to one or more magazines and I’m pleasantly surprised to see how many are still around. Still, I’ve been out of the hobby for a while and am curious what everyone’s reading these days for primarily US coins. Of course, all magazines should cover at least some of the dark side. So what are you subscribed to?

I remember getting Coinage for years but I think I stopped 9 or 10 years ago.
I did enjoy skimming through it.

I do not subscribe, but I read the Coin/Stamp magazines for free at my local library.

I subscribe to the first four magazines listed. None is as good as they used to be, but Coin World has evolved in a way that I like the best.

I am leaning towards coin world. In spite of my digital life, I lean towards print. I just like the tangible feel of a magazine; at least I do while I have the option.

The basic Coin World deal gives you the slick glossy monthly print magazine plus internet access to the three weekly editions in between for about $24 per annum ($29 if you want the print edition to come in an opaque plastic wrapper for security).

The internet editions appear each Saturday morning.

This is the best deal, less clutter, although occasionally something appears in a weekly edition that I would like to save too.

I believe that you can get each print weekly edition plus the print glossy monthly for $79 per annum (maybe $10 extra for being shipped in plastic wrappers). I didn't look up the exact amounts and my memory could be slightly off.

I have recently upped my hopes for the future of Numismatic News going forward, and I renewed my annual subscription.

I don’t have the background to collect errors but I’ve always found them cool. Maybe I’ll add that to the mix :)

@OPA Then my recollection must have been $69 plus $10 for the plastic wrappers.

I did it that way for a year, but changed back to just getting the print monthly - 52 weeks of print add up to too much clutter in an already extremely cluttered life.

I get Coin World and the monthly ANA magazine but to be honest by the time they show up I have already read about 99% of the stories here in the forum.

Another vote for Mint Error News. I’m amazed by how many things are published in it and I’m glad to hear @ErrorsOnCoins is going to be published in it. I think I may have suggested it?

I also like the ANS Magazine and the Numismatist.

I've subscribed since 1971 to COINage. Interesting articles, nice pictures, especially
the last 10-15 years. The last couple of years they have had articles that recommend
coins with future value growth. I don't swim in those deep waters. Yet I still subscribe.
I saved these since I started. This past fall I donated them to the Neuman Portal. I will
make periodic shipments to the NP as they accumulate. Since 1978 I have subscribed
to Coin World. Once I'm done with those they wind up in the doctors waiting room. Same
for the Numismatist. I always look forward to reading each magazine as they arrive.

I used to subscribe to Coin World and Numismatic News....Stopped years ago and now rely mainly on the internet. I do occasionally pick up a Coin magazine at Barnes & Noble though, when I see an article of interest. Cheers, RickO

I let my subscription with NN expire when they started sending electronic editions most of the time, instead of the hard copy.

Also, it seems current coin magazines have very little information. At least half of the content seems to be price lists. And, too many articles about foreign coins, which I could care less about.

If I had to pick though, I would subscribe to Coin World.

I brought a magazine for the first time last month. that was the first one in I think a dozen years. ( I did have fun thumbing through it though :) )

The Numismatist is the best for in depth stories.

I’ve gotten Coin World since the early ‘70’s and while it’s a fraction of the pages it used to be, they have done a good job staying viable. I just wish the USPS could get it to me in a timely manner. Sometimes I don’t get one for three weeks and then get two on the same day or three of them two days apart.
